What are Miwok?

The Miwok are a group of Native American peoples who traditionally lived in what is now central and northern California. They are not a job title, but rather an indigenous group with their own distinct languages, cultures, and histories. The Miwok people are divided into several subgroups, including the Plains Miwok, Lake Miwok, Coast Miwok, and Sierra Miwok, each associated with different geographic regions. Today, many Miwok descendants continue to preserve their cultural heritage and traditions.
