JOB SUMMARY
The Deputy Court Bailiff provides safety and security for the San Marcos Municipal Court by supporting daily court operations, enforcing court orders, and carrying out warrant and document service duties. The position ensures a secure courtroom environment, promotes compliance with court directives, and supports the effective operation of the Municipal Court.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
  • Provides security for all open court sessions and daily court operations.
  • Monitors and controls access to the court facility, including screening individuals entering the building.
  • Responds to disturbances, threats, and emergencies in accordance with established protocols.
  • Serves summonses, subpoenas, and other legal documents issued by the Municipal Court.
  • Conducts research and field activities to locate individuals with outstanding warrants.
  • Executes arrests when necessary and completes associated documentation and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records of warrant enforcement, service attempts, and case outcomes.
  • Communicates with defendants through phone calls, written notices, and in-person visits to facilitate voluntary compliance.
  • Prepares monthly reports summarizing enforcement activity and case resolutions.
  • Maintains required certifications, adheres to all applicable laws and policies, and demonstrates professional conduct at all times.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer Certification or higher.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of honorable service with a law enforcement agency.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Completion of TCOLE-approved Court Security Training within one year of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in courtroom security or municipal law enforcement.
  • Familiarity with warrant enforcement procedures and legal documentation.
  • Strong de-escalation and conflict resolution skills.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT

  • Knowledge of state and municipal codes, court procedures, and arrest protocols.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed. The role involves frequent standing, walking, speaking, and hearing. Occasional activities may include sitting, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, pushing/pulling, and operating foot controls. Running may be required in emergencies. Visual acuity is necessary for observation, situational assessment, and documentation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work occurs in both indoor and outdoor settings and may include exposure to varying weather conditions. The position may involve contact with individuals who are hostile, uncooperative, or experiencing a crisis. Exposure to infectious diseases or other hazards may occur. Appropriate safety measures and personal protective equipment are used as required. This is a safety-sensitive position.
