Summary:
The IPB intern will assist with our laboratory and greenhouse studies related to the development of novel biopesticides to control a wide variety of agricultural pest species. The Intern will assist in preparing materials for bioassays, establishing and maintaining insect colonies and cleaning the lab and greenhouse. The Intern will also support other lab and greenhouse activities as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Assist Scientists in the setting up and execution of experiments. These duties can range from early-stage screening of potential products to routine Quality Control testing.
  • Assist in the maintenance of multiple insects species through diet preparation, collection and processing of eggs, creation and repair of insect cages, and routine monitoring.
  • Prepare materials needed for bioassays and assist in setting up various bioassays (in vitro and in planta) to evaluate insecticidal candidates and deepen understanding of established products. Record data and results in an organized fashion.
  • Keep clean the laboratory and the greenhouse (clean glassware, growing containers, benches and floors as needed).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule will be established with supervisor upon hiring.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A successful candidate is a quick-learner, innovative, creative and team oriented with:
  • Currently working towards a Bachelor's degree in biological sciences. Prefer an emphasis in entomology, nematology or plant pathology.
  • Hands-on lab and greenhouse experience
  • A professional and positive attitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

In addition, the Intern should have:
  • Good time management, organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task
  • Commitment to work at least 10-15 hours per week during the school year.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point).
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with help or independently occasionally.
