Mining Design information

What is mining design?

Mining design refers to the process of planning and engineering the layout, development, and operation of a mine. This includes determining the most efficient and safe methods for extracting minerals or other geological materials from the earth. Mining design encompasses considerations such as mine layout, ventilation, safety, environmental impact, equipment selection, and scheduling. Professionals in mining design work to optimize resource recovery while minimizing costs and environmental impact. Their work is crucial to ensuring that mining operations are both profitable and sustainable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mining Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mining Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mining engineering or geology, strong analytical skills, and typically a relevant degree or professional certification. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Surpac, or MineSight, along with familiarity with mine planning systems and safety regulations, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for creating safe, efficient, and sustainable mine designs while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Mining Design vs Mining Engineering?

AspectMining DesignMining Engineering
Primary FocusCreating and planning mine layouts, designing extraction methodsApplying engineering principles to develop, operate, and optimize mining operations
Required CredentialsMining diploma or degree, CAD skills, knowledge of geologyMining engineering degree, professional engineering license, technical expertise
Work EnvironmentOffice-based with site visits, CAD software useFieldwork, site supervision, project management
Industry UsageDesigning new mines or modifying existing onesManaging mining operations, ensuring safety and efficiency

Mining Design focuses on planning and designing mine layouts and extraction methods, often working with CAD tools. Mining Engineering encompasses broader engineering principles applied to mining operations, including management, safety, and optimization. Both roles are essential in the mining industry but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What types of teams and professionals does a Mining Design engineer typically collaborate with during a project?

Mining Design engineers work closely with a variety of specialists throughout a project’s lifecycle. This usually includes geologists, surveyors, environmental consultants, and project managers to ensure that designs are technically sound, safe, and adhere to regulatory standards. They also frequently liaise with mine operations staff and equipment suppliers to incorporate practical insights into their plans. Effective collaboration and communication skills are essential for integrating feedback and troubleshooting design challenges as they arise.

Job description

Role Overview

Hands-on engineering leader to own the full structural design lifecycle for the company's ultra-class rigid-frame haul trucks (250 to 375 ton machines) built for the world's most demanding mining environments. This is not a caretaker role. The mandate is to elevate a tenured team and set a higher bar for engineering rigor, while personally engaging with the technical challenges that make this work genuinely interesting: fatigue life, weld design, and structural weight optimization.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the Structural Design department (4–6 engineers), including performance reviews, coaching, and personnel decisions
  • Own full structural system design: superstructure, dump body, front/rear running gear, castings, and weld design
  • Drive fatigue life analysis using cyclic load profiles and S-N curves; designing to finite fatigue life, not just static ultimate load
  • Develop and review weld joint designs, including full-penetration welds, fillet vs. groove tradeoffs, and toe geometry
  • Apply 3D modeling using PTC Creo (preferred) or equivalent platform; strong preference for top-down methodology
  • Mentor engineers to understand the physics behind FEA outputs, not just produce results
  • Develop business cases and written justifications to unlock resources and support across the organization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and international counterparts; up to 20% travel
  • Contribute to root cause analysis, failure analysis, and field warranty investigations as needed
Requirements
  • Hands-on structural engineering experience with welded fabrications, castings, and/or heavy machined structures; must have designed or co-designed real hardware
  • Fatigue life analysis depth: cyclic loading, S-N curves, finite fatigue life design
  • Weld design knowledge: full-penetration welds, joint selection, and fatigue impact of geometry decisions
  • Free body diagram fluency; can trace force flow independently from software output
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling (Creo/Pro-E, SolidWorks, CATIA, or Siemens NX)
  • Minimum 2 years directly managing technical staff (reviews, coaching, personnel decisions)
Strong Preferences
  • Heavy equipment structural experience: mining, construction, crane, agriculture, or similar cyclic-loading environment
  • Material selection experience with HSLA steel - weldability, tensile strength, and cold-weather properties
  • Top-down 3D modeling methodology - must be able to discuss and demonstrate approach
  • Sand casting design experience with wall thickness and fatigue geometry considerations
  • Ability to write clear business cases and engineering justifications
