Job description
W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company is seeking a proven, field-proven General Superintendent / Construction Manager Power Generation to lead overall jobsite construction execution for our Yates Industrial Division.
The Construction Manager is responsible for the total on-site execution of medium-to-large power generation projects (normally up to 5 million work hours), ensuring all safety (HSSE), quality, cost, schedule, client interface, and facility turnover goals are achieved.
Because Yates Industrial operates under an 80% Direct Hire / 20% Subcontractor execution model, this leadership role requires deep expertise in managing direct-hire craft personnel (boilermakers, millwrights, pipefitters, ironworkers, electricians), driving craft productivity, and executing complex power plant technology including Combined-Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT), Air-Cooled Condensers (ACC), Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), Industrial Boilers, and Balance of Plant (BOP) systems.
Key Responsibilities & Principal Duties
A. Direct-Hire Craft Execution & Field Operations- Accountable for all on-site direct-hire construction operations, managing craft superintendents, craft foremen, and field discipline leaders.
- Oversee execution of heavy rigging, turbine/generator setting, boiler tubework, high-pressure steam piping installation, structural steel erection, and heavy civil foundations.
- Monitor daily craft labor productivity, crew sizing, equipment utilization, and work sequencing to ensure work is performed within baseline budget and schedule constraints.
- Provide technical constructability input during front-end engineering design and preconstruction planning phases.
- Direct and coordinate specialty subcontractor operations (e.g., non-destructive testing/NDT, refractory, specialized insulation, electrical testing/commissioning, and heavy haul logistics).
- Ensure all subcontractors fully comply with Yates procedures, quality standards, safety expectations, and integrated schedule logic.
- Actively build and sustain an exceptional health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) culture that makes safety and environmental awareness a natural part of daily work.
- Lead by example in "Safety Leadership," holding all site personnel, craft labor, and subcontractors accountable for unsafe acts and coaching for continuous safety improvement.
- Implement and enforce the Project Execution Plan (PEP) across all site disciplines.
- Rigorously control scope creep by identifying changed field conditions early, ensuring scope changes are documented, priced, and approved before performing out-of-scope work.
- Track productivity trends, analyze cost/schedule deviations, and implement aggressive turnaround/workaround plans to keep projects on track.
- Maintain chronological project records, including meeting minutes, daily logs, and written confirmations of client instructions.
- Serve as the primary on-site client interface, promoting an atmosphere of open and honest communication with owner representatives.
- Oversee system completion, punch-list execution, pre-commissioning, startup support, and final facility turnover to the client.
- Bachelors Degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field is preferred (equivalent direct-hire power management experience may substitute).
- Minimum 10+ years of heavy industrial construction experience, with at least 5+ years in a senior management role (General Superintendent or Construction Manager).
- Required: Proven management experience on direct-hire power generation projects.
- Preferred: Hands-on experience with Air-Cooled Condensers (ACC), Simple Cycle and Combined Cycle power facilities.
- In-depth ability to read, interpret, and execute technical specifications, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, blueprints, and engineering/architectural drawings.
- Comprehensive understanding of ASME boiler/piping codes, AWS welding standards, and OSHA heavy industrial construction regulations.
- Strong knowledge of project controls, labor cost reporting, and Primavera P6 construction schedule logic.
- Excellent leadership, verbal/written communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Proven track record of managing open-shop direct-hire personnel or multi-trade union labor in fast-paced turnaround/greenfield environments.
- Strict commitment to Yates Core Values, Code of Conduct, and Safety Standards.
- Location: Assigned to project jobsites throughout North America, with base support from the Yates Industrial Division in Birmingham, Alabama.
- Physical Demands: Walking active job sites, standing, climbing scaffolding/ladders, inspecting elevated structures, operating equipment, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Environment: Outward field conditions in varied weather environments (heat, cold, dust, active plant operations).
- HSSE & Safety Metric: Zero lost-time incidents and industry-leading Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR).
- Direct-Hire Productivity: Performance Factor (PF) achieved at or better than 1.0 against baseline labor estimates.
- Schedule & Milestone Compliance: On-time completion of major outage tie-ins, steam blow, mechanical completion, and commercial operation date (COD).
- Budget & Scope Discipline: Execution within approved financial budget, zero unapproved scope growth, and prompt change order resolution.
