Job description

Sample Van Driver

The Sample Van Driver works with customer dairy and laboratory staff to deliver samples, mail, and other items on a regular schedule along established sample van routes. This role partners with the Sample Van Coordinator to ensure that approximately 9–11-hour shifts scheduled weekly and totaling 40+ hours/week are covered to accommodate business needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Picks up and delivers milk samples for official and special testing from dairies to laboratory testing sites.
  • Maintains sample temperatures between 32° and 40° degrees Fahrenheit via monitoring at each pickup and at delivery.
  • Records and reports sample cooler and sample TC temperatures.
  • Delivers or picks up lab supplies, sample vials, mail, and other items as requested by management.
  • Maintains complete and accurate reports of weekly activity for review and discussion with supervisor.
  • Maintains vehicles in good operating condition by scheduling maintenance work and routine service at regular intervals.
  • Adheres to assigned routes and following time schedules.
  • Abides by all transportation laws and maintaining a safe driving record.

Education & Experience:

  • Valid driver's license issued by the state where you intend to work
  • Clean driving record
  • Experience in a related job preferred
  • Willingness to adhere to assigned routes, schedules, safety procedures, and transportation laws
  • Strong time management and customer service skills
  • Ability to walk, drive, lift and carry heavy items for extended periods
  • Ability to independently pick up and move from the ground to waist height up to 30 sixty-pound coolers filled with ice and samples
  • Attention to detail, high integrity, and use of sound judgement.
  • Functional in Outlook and Microsoft Word

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the responsibilities of this job.

  • Physical Demands
    • The employee is required to: use fine motor skills such as finger and hand dexterity to type, manipulate small objects, and operate standard office equipment frequently (< 33% of time)
    • The employee is required to: sit, verbally communicate, and hear frequently (> 75% of the time)
    • The employee is required to walk and stand frequently
    • The employee is required to lift and/or move up to 60 pounds frequently
  • Work Environment
    • The employee functions in a vehicle and outdoor environment
    • Protective Equipment
    • No protective equipment is required in office environments
    • Protective equipment may be required in on-farm and plant environments
