To thrive as a Military Network Engineer, you need strong expertise in computer networks, cybersecurity, and information technology, often backed by a relevant degree and security clearance. Familiarity with military-specific communication systems, network monitoring tools, and certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or Cisco CCNA is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure secure, reliable, and mission-critical network operations in demanding military environments.

What are some unique challenges Military Network Engineers face compared to civilian network engineering roles?

Military Network Engineers often operate in highly secure, mission-critical environments where reliability and security are paramount. Unlike typical corporate settings, they may need to manage networks in austere or deployed locations, support classified communications, and ensure systems remain operational under adverse conditions. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including cybersecurity experts, intelligence analysts, and military leadership—is frequent, and engineers must stay adaptable to rapidly changing operational requirements. These factors make strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to ongoing learning especially important in this field.

What are Military Network Engineers?

Military Network Engineers are specialized IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain secure communication networks for military organizations. They ensure that data and communications remain protected from cyber threats and are available to authorized personnel at all times, often working with classified and mission-critical systems. Their responsibilities can include configuring network hardware, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and implementing cybersecurity protocols. Military Network Engineers play a key role in supporting defense operations and ensuring the integrity of military communications.

Job Title

Sr. Cyber Security Engineer

About your role:

You will serve as a Sr. Cyber Security Engineer responsible for designing, building, and evolving our internal enterprise browser platform with a focus on secure, centrally governed access to generative AI tools. You will work closely with security architecture, identity, networking, and AI governance teams to embed policy enforcement, visibility, and controls directly into the browser runtime, enabling secure-by-design application delivery across the enterprise.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise browser features and system components that support secure access to internal and external applications.
  • Build integrations between the enterprise browser and security ecosystems, including endpoint security and device management, network security technologies, and identity and access management solutions.
  • Implement browser-level security mechanisms, including session isolation, in-browser access enforcement, authentication and authorization workflows, and data protection and policy controls.
  • Develop services that collect, interpret, and act on device posture, endpoint telemetry, and user identity and contextual access information.
  • Design and implement a browser-level AI Controls Framework that governs enterprise use of generative AI tools (for example, Gemini, Claude, Grok, OpenAI), including centralized policy enforcement, isolation of sensitive data, guardrails for data submission and exfiltration, and instrumentation for AI interactions.
  • Create browser-mediated abstractions and capabilities such as AI usage classification and risk scoring, approved model routing, dynamic masking and redaction, and identity-bound usage controls to reduce the need for direct integration with each AI provider.
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex issues across browser runtime, network stack, operating system integrations, and identity layers while contributing to performance tuning, reliability engineering, and platform scalability.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.

Experience you'll need to have:

  • 6+ years of experience in software engineering in systems, platforms, or security-focused development environments.
  • 6+ years of experience with one or more system-level languages such as C++, Rust, Go, Java, or similar object-oriented or systems programming languages.
  • 5+ years of experience working with network protocols (HTTP/S, TLS, proxy architectures) and authentication and authorization flows (OAuth, Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), OpenID Connect (OIDC)) in enterprise environments.
  • 4+ years of experience integrating with enterprise security and access control systems such as endpoint security, device management, secure web gateways, private application access, or security infrastructure APIs.
  • Experience with browser concepts such as rendering engines and runtime components, extensions or embedded browser frameworks, and network traffic interception and inspection models.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills across distributed systems, including complex interactions between browser, network, identity, and operating system layers.
  • Bachelor's degree or degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education, related experience and/or military experience.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Experience with Chromium-based architectures or commercial enterprise browsers such as Island.
  • Background in endpoint security, application security, network security, and/or Zero Trust architectures.
  • System integration experience with both Windows and macOS platforms.
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices, threat modeling, software hardening, and security compliance or regulated-industry requirements.
  • Exposure to AI or machine learning governance, data protection controls, or secure enterprise adoption of large language model (LLM) technologies.

How you'll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experience helps you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.

Travel:This role requires occasional travel (up to 10%).

Sponsorship:

You must currently possess valid and unrestricted U.S. work authorization to be considered for this role. Individuals with temporary visas including, but not limited to, F-1 (OPT, CPT, STEM), H-1B, H-2, or TN, or any candidate requiring sponsorship, now or in the future, will not be considered for this role.

Benefits at Fiserv:

  • Fuel Your Life program to support your physical, financial, social, and emotional well-being.
  • Paid holidays and generous time away policies.
  • No-cost mental health support through Employee Assistance Programs.
  • Living Proof program to recognize your peers' extra effort with points redeemable for rewards.
  • Eight Employee Resource Groups to foster a collaborative culture and expand your network.
  • Unparalleled professional growth with training, development, and internal mobility opportunities.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance options available from day one.
  • Retirement planning and discounted shares with the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Tuition assistance and reimbursement program.
  • Paid parental, caregiver, and military leave.
