What is military biology?

A Military Biology job involves studying biological threats, including infectious diseases, bioterrorism agents, and environmental hazards that could affect military operations and national security. Professionals in this field conduct research, develop detection methods, and create countermeasures such as vaccines or protective gear. They may work for the military, government agencies, or defense contractors to enhance biodefense capabilities and protect personnel from biological risks.

What does a military biologist do?

Military Biology professionals typically spend their days conducting laboratory research on biological agents, running experiments to understand threats, and analyzing biological samples using advanced equipment. They often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including chemists, medical officers, and defense specialists, to develop detection systems and countermeasures against biohazards. Responsibilities also include maintaining strict safety and security protocols, documenting findings, and staying up to date on emerging biological threats. This dynamic environment requires adaptability and a dedication to supporting critical defense and public safety missions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in military biology?

To thrive in Military Biology, you need robust expertise in biological sciences—such as microbiology, virology, or biochemistry—supported by an advanced degree (e.g., MS or PhD) and often a background in laboratory research. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), biohazard protocols, and specialized equipment (like PCR machines or spectrometers) is typically expected, as well as relevant security clearances. Exceptional analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly are highly valued in this position. These qualifications ensure safe, accurate research that directly supports national defense and biosecurity efforts.

Are there military biologists?

Yes, military biologists are professionals who work within defense agencies or military organizations to study biological threats, develop vaccines, and ensure biosecurity. They often have backgrounds in biology, microbiology, or related fields and may work in laboratories, field environments, or research settings as part of national security efforts.

What can I do with a military biology degree?

A military biology degree prepares individuals for roles in defense research, biodefense, and biological threat assessment. Graduates can work in laboratories, research facilities, or government agencies, often requiring security clearances and knowledge of microbiology, immunology, and laboratory techniques.

Job description

Job Description
The Biology Department at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in plant biology beginning in Fall 2024. Qualified candidates will possess a Ph.D. in plant biology or a related field, have post-doctoral experience or other training that will support the development of an independent research program that involves undergraduates, and show enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate-level courses at all levels of the curriculum (https://www.skidmore.edu/biology/index.php). Preferred qualified candidates will offer expertise in plant cell or molecular biology, advanced microscopy, and/or informatics that will leverage our core facilities (see below), enrich and diversify our research programs, and offer the experience, enthusiasm, and ability to integrate these resources and technologies into all levels of the biology curriculum.
The successful candidate will have a dedicated research laboratory within the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences (CIS), a modern, well-equipped facility designed to foster interdisciplinary connections among the life science programs and the College. The CIS houses extraordinary shared facilities including the Skidmore Microscopy Imaging Center (https://www.skidmore.edu/smic/index.php) and the Skidmore Analytical Interdisciplinary Laboratory (https://www.skidmore.edu/sail/index.php), each staffed by highly-qualified personnel. Adjacent to the CIS is a newly-constructed modular greenhouse.
In addition, the successful candidate will receive generous start-up funds, a pre-tenure research leave, funds to travel to conferences/workshops, and a course release in the first year. The hire may also benefit from Skidmore's North Woods (150-acre forested-landscape abutting campus) and proximity to the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Hudson River Valley and Adirondack regions.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach 18 contact hours per year where each lecture or lab section constitutes 3 contact hours. Teaching expectations include delivery of a major-level introductory lecture course in cell and molecular biology (BI 107); mid-level lecture/lab courses in plant biology; upper-level courses in their area of expertise; and an interdisciplinary first-year seminar.
Pay Range: Commensurate with experience
Review of completed applications will begin on October 2, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries about the position may be sent to the department chair, Dr. Pat Hilleren (phillere@skidmore.edu). Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Special Instructions for Applicant:
A complete application includes all of the following materials: (1) a cover letter that describes how your disciplinary expertise will enable you to engage with an undergraduate student body; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of teaching philosophy and goals that includes a description of how you will engage a diverse learning community; (4) a research statement that includes a plan for the sustained involvement of undergraduates; and (5) the names, affiliations, and contact information of three professional references who can provide letters of support in a timely fashion upon request.
