Job description

Join a dedicated healthcare team in the heart of the Midwest region as a Surgical First Assistant. This role involves collaborating closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and surgical staff to deliver exceptional patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Utilizing sterile techniques and specialized equipment, you will play a vital role in supporting surgical operations.
Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare surgical cases accurately using physician preference cards and appropriate instruments.
  • Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology to assist in surgeries.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques, demonstrate manual dexterity, and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Operate sterilization equipment following established protocols.
  • Monitor and manage implantable devices with sterile technique and ensure proper function.
  • Inspect and maintain surgical equipment prior to procedures.
  • Assist in patient positioning to ensure safety and optimal surgical access.
  • Provide clear visualization of the operative site under physician guidance.
  • Support the surgeon in achieving and maintaining hemostasis and assist with wound closure.
  • Apply wound dressings as directed by the surgeon.
  • Demonstrate accountability, work independently, adapt to change, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.
  • Organize information efficiently, maintain a clean workspace, and manage time effectively.
  • Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality and patient safety under direct surgeon supervision.
Education Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required. Experience Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory. Certifications and Licenses
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • First Assistant Certification is preferred.
Mental and Physical Requirements This position requires significant mental focus. Physical demands include lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Working Conditions Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases through blood and body fluids is expected. Occasional encounters with hostile individuals may occur.
