EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Bachelors Degree
Five years special education teaching experience/related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
CERTIFICATION :
Valid Texas Teaching Certificate by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBOE);
Special Education Certificate by the SBOE
High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.
PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY :
Assist in planning, developing, and implementing training and support for paraprofessionals in special education assignments. Assist with monitoring the implementation of Individual Education Programs (IEPs), including Behavior Intervention Plans
IDEA-B FORMULA FEDERAL FUNDED POSITION
The purpose of IDEA-B is to provide special education and related services to children with disabilities ages 3-21. The regulations implementing IDEA-B define the purpose of the act as a means to do the following:
• Ensure that all students with disabilities have available a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) that includes special education and related services to meet their unique needs.
• Ensure that the rights of students with disabilities and of their parents are protected.
• Assist states and localities in providing for the education of all students with disabilities.
• Assess and ensure the effectiveness of efforts to educate those students.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops, coordinates, and presents professional development in a variety of formats to paraprofessionals regarding their roles in supporting specially designed instruction across settings, to include academic, social, and behavioral considerations
2. Assists with training and onboarding of new paraprofessionals in special education assignments
3. Provides coaching and job-embedded professional development to paraprofessionals supporting students with IEPs in various settings, including but not limited to general education/inclusion, resource, Redirection, ALE, and ECSE
4. Provides training in de-escalation and crisis management. Models these de-escalation and management strategies in the campus settings
5. Assists with training of substitutes for special education
6. Provide training and coaching to teachers who work with paraprofessionals to share best practices for effective collaboration
7. In collaboration with coordinators and directors, identifies areas of need related to training for paraprofessionals across the continuum of services
8. Models the use of data to drive instructional decisions, including the use of the District data management systems, and provides guidance related to the paraprofessionals' role in data collection
9. Models the use of behavioral strategies, accommodations and supplemental aids to support acquisition and generalization of academic, behavioral, and social skills
10. Assists with recruitment and identification of paraprofessional candidates, to include assisting at job fairs
11. Supports District Special Education initiatives through knowledge of regulations, curriculum, research-based instructional strategies and effective intervention practices.
12. Articulates the District Special Education initiatives and goals to campus staff and administration.
13. Participates in parent education, community and transition-related events
14. Maintains a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
15. Participates in and/or conducts staff development activities to improve job related skills.
16. Keeps informed of and complies with state, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
17. Compiles, maintains and files all reports, records, and other required documents.
18. Attends, presents and participates in departmental meetings and professional activities.
19. Maintains confidentiality of information.
20. Reports to work on time every day.
21. Performs additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:• Knowledge of state curriculum, vertical alignment of curriculum, and specially-designed instruction
• Experience with implementation of strategies and interventions for students with autism
• Familiarity with current data management systems
• Familiarity with current coaching techniques
• Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to effectively present information to teachers, staff, and administrators
• Valid Texas Drivers' License with a driving record that meets the requirements of the District
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee may be required to assist in lifting and positioning students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:The environmental characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Exposure to biological hazards.
