Job description

The organisation
A private foundation, established by the founder of a major technology company, working across education, health and climate. Its flagship education programme is a digital learning platform built in partnership with a leading international children's agency.
The platform reaches over ten million registered learners across more than forty countries - children, young people and teachers, many in places where it is the only route to structured education. It works online, on mobile, and fully offline, so learners in areas with no connectivity can carry on and sync when they reconnect. The ambition is fifty million learners by 2030.
The role
You would be the second engineer in-house, working alongside the Lead Software Engineer and an external technical consultant.
The platform is mid-migration. A legacy monolith is being progressively replaced by a modern Next.js and .NET stack on Azure, without interruption to learners already using it. In the last year the team has brought continuous integration in-house, containerised the legacy application for cross-platform local development, and established the architecture for V2. The engineering practice is young, and there is real scope to influence how it works.
You would be writing code from day one against defined feature work, with the Lead Engineer owning architecture. As V2 matures there is a clear route to owning larger features end to end.
A small team on a platform this size means unusually high leverage. It also means the work is hands-on and pragmatic rather than abstract. If you want to ship things that reach millions of people and see the effect quickly, this is a good place to do it.
Requirements
What we're looking for
Essential
  • Around 3-5 years' professional software engineering experience
  • Strong mission-driven orientation and motivation to make an impact
  • Strong production React
  • Comfortable across the stack - roughly 80% frontend, 20% backend-- and not someone who avoids backend work
  • A self-starter who can cut through ambiguity in a small team

Helpful, not required
  • Next.js
  • Azure
  • C# or .NET
  • Education, international development, or building for low-connectivity environments
  • Comfortable being the second engineer in-house, working alongside a Lead Software Engineer and an external technical consultant

Benefits
  • Competitive salary of 125000-150000 USD annually
  • Remote working
