Description of Duties

Provide mid-level provider services which include, but are not limited to:

  • comprehensive assessments and management of uncomplicated acute and stable chronic health problems of inmates
  • assisting and working collaboratively with the physician in management of selected complex medical problems
  • performing initial comprehensive medical and psychosocial screenings
  • performing physical examinations and risk evaluations of inmates
  • performing basic dental examinations and detecting abnormalities of the teeth and gums
  • performing mental health evaluations including the ability to screen for suicidal risk
  • conducting daily sick call
  • assisting the physician and other providers with procedures
  • administering medications
  • obtaining intravenous access for administration of intravenous fluids and/or medications
  • providing a wide range of emergency services, in the absence of the physician, including primary care for trauma and life-saving procedures
  • performing minor surgical procedures, such as incision and drainage, suturing of lacerations, removal of cysts, and removal/repair of ingrown toenails
  • after consultation with the physician, prescribing medications and treatment for illnesses
  • establishing diagnostic impressions and requesting appropriate diagnostic tests (e.g., laboratory, x-ray, visual acuity, electrocardiogram, etc.)
  • interpreting results and selected laboratory findings including, but not limited to, urinalysis, complete blood counts, metabolic panels, and various cultures for bacterial infection and antibiotic susceptibility
  • ordering and/or interpretating audiologic testing and screening of distance and near vision as well as colorblindness
  • providing preliminarily interpretation of radiographs, including dental radiographs, to identify gross abnormalities such as fractures, displacements, etc.
  • interpretating electrocardiogram tracings and having the ability to detect cardiac abnormalities
  • functioning as a member of a primary care team under the direction of a physician and in collaboration with other disciplines and providers
  • entering pertinent clinical information in an electronic medical record system in a timely manner and following proper documentation procedures

Providing mid-level provider services may require a significant amount of physical exertion, including but not limited to, walking, bending, and periods of standing lasting for two to three hours at a time.

The contractor will adhere to all Bureau of Prisons Health Services policies, procedures, and clinical practice guidelines relating to mid-level provider services.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

PA

  1. Be a graduate from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained2.
  2. Have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination.
  3. Maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.
  4. Must possess proof of a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a physician assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

NP

  1. Hold a graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  2. Have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  3. Maintain status as a licensed nurse practitioner, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.
  4. Must proof of current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional requirements for all mid-level providers include:

  1. Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
  2. One year of experience providing mid-level provider services in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care

Preferred qualifications and experience for all mid-level providers include:

  1. Three or more years of experience in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care
  2. Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting
  3. Additional professional education and certifications such as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), etc.
