Mid Backend Developer information

What is a mid backend developer?

Mid Backend Developers are software engineers with intermediate experience who focus on building, maintaining, and optimizing the server-side components of web or mobile applications. They typically work with databases, APIs, server logic, and integration with front-end systems. Mid-level developers have a solid understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, or Ruby and are expected to contribute to code reviews, troubleshoot issues, and implement new features under minimal supervision. Their role bridges the gap between junior developers, who need more guidance, and senior developers, who handle architecture and high-level decisions.

What are some typical challenges a mid backend developer might face when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

As a Mid Backend Developer, one common challenge is ensuring that new technologies or frameworks integrate smoothly with legacy systems without disrupting current operations. This often involves understanding both the old and new codebases, data migration, and dealing with compatibility issues. Collaborating closely with frontend developers, DevOps, and QA teams is essential to address potential bottlenecks and maintain performance. Additionally, thorough testing and documentation are crucial to ensure long-term stability and maintainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid backend developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mid Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically backed by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools and systems like Git, RESTful APIs, Docker, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is usually required. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that set high performers apart. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintainability, and seamless integration of backend services in dynamic technical environments.

What is the difference between Mid Backend Developer vs Backend Developer?

AspectMid Backend DeveloperBackend Developer
Experience LevelMid-level (2-4 years)Entry to Mid-level (0-3 years)
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in server-side languages, databases, APIs; often familiar with cloud servicesBasic to intermediate backend skills, some familiarity with similar technologies
Work EnvironmentCollaborates on complex projects, often in teams with frontend and DevOpsWorks on foundational backend tasks, may be part of smaller teams or solo projects
Industry UsageCommon in tech companies, startups, and enterprise environmentsWidespread across various industries, including tech, e-commerce, and finance

The Mid Backend Developer typically has more experience and handles more complex backend systems compared to a Backend Developer. While both roles require similar foundational skills, the mid-level position involves greater responsibility, problem-solving, and collaboration on larger projects.

Job description

At Digital Turbine, we make mobile advertising experiences more meaningful and rewarding for users, app publishers, and advertisers - intelligently connecting people in more ways, across more devices. We provide app publishers and advertisers with powerful ads and experiences that captivate consumers, fuel performance, and help telecoms and OEMs supercharge awareness, acquisition, and monetization. In a rapidly evolving industry, we are constantly innovating and creating better paths of discovery to connect consumers, publishers, and advertisers across the mobile ecosystem.

Please note that Digital Turbine is a hybrid work environment-only candidates local to the posting location will be considered.

Digital Turbine runs on small, autonomous pods that own outcomes and roadmaps end-to-end. We hire leaders who balance strong technical judgment with people-first management: leaders who can guide team execution, foster engineering excellence, and hire and grow top talent without getting bogged down in language-specific dogma.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead full-stack engineering pods responsible for building the product surfaces that bring our marketplace together-campaign management, unified dashboards, audience tooling, and low-latency supply/demand APIs. You will partner directly with Product Management, Design, and Engineering Directors to align roadmaps, drive high-throughput backend architecture, and maintain operational health across a polyglot stack. While this is primarily a people and delivery leadership role, a strong background in low-latency systems, algorithmic problem-solving, and scalable web surfaces is essential for technical coaching and system design oversight.

About the Software Engineering Manager:

  • People Leadership: Direct-manage a team of Senior, Mid-level and Junior Full Stack Engineers across front-end, back-end, and data domains. Conduct 1:1s, guide career development, handle performance management, and foster an inclusive, high-ownership engineering culture.

  • Execution & Delivery: Partner with Product Leads to translate business goals into clear technical roadmaps, scoping, and sprint execution. Ensure pods consistently deliver robust, reliable product surfaces on time.

  • Technical Oversight: Drive high architectural and quality standards across the team. Coach engineers on API design, service scalability, pushing heavy computational logic to backend services, and front-end performance.

  • Hiring & Team Growth: Lead recruitment efforts to scale the pod, recruiting diverse, top-tier engineering talent and building out sustainable team onboarding processes.

  • Operational Excellence: Ensure overall health, observability, and performance of services owned by your pods. Drive incident management, post-mortems, and equitable on-call practices.

  • Strategic Alignment: Serve as the primary engineering advocate for your pods, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders and aligning pod delivery with Digital Turbine's broader architecture and business strategy.

About you as the Software Engineering Manager:

  • Experience: 2+ years of direct people management experience leading software engineering teams, coupled with 8+ years of hands-on software development experience building high-scale, production platforms.

  • Technical Breadth: Strong background in full-stack architecture, with a heavy emphasis on distributed back-end systems, API design, data modeling, and low-latency performance. Familiarity with polyglot environments (e.g., TypeScript/React on the front end; Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, or C++ on the back end).

  • Leadership Capabilities: Proven track record in mentoring senior/staff engineers, navigating complex technical trade-offs, and resolving cross-pod dependencies.

  • Process & Delivery: Deep comfort with modern Agile methodologies, CI/CD practices, cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP), and operational metrics (SLAs, SLOs, system health).

  • Radford Leveling Alignment: Fits an M3 Manager level-demonstrating capability in managing operational/tactical execution, influencing pod-level strategy, and owning performance and career growth for direct reports.

Nice to Have Skills:

  • Experience in AdTech, high-throughput marketplaces, or data-intensive dashboard surfaces.

  • Background managing distributed/remote teams across international time zones (US, Europe, Israel).

  • Experience integrating data pipelines, machine learning, or BI tools into product workflows.
