What is a Microstation Designer?

A Microstation Designer is a professional who uses MicroStation, a computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create, modify, and manage technical drawings and models for engineering, architecture, and construction projects. These designers work closely with engineers and architects to produce accurate plans, blueprints, and 3D models. Their role often involves interpreting project specifications, ensuring design compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with other team members to deliver high-quality design solutions. Microstation Designers are commonly employed in industries such as civil engineering, transportation, utilities, and architecture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Microstation Designer?

To thrive as a Microstation Designer, you need a background in drafting or engineering technology, strong spatial visualization skills, and proficiency with CAD design principles. Expertise in Bentley Microstation software, familiarity with project management tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications such as AutoCAD certification are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with engineers and clients are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate project deliverables, efficient workflow, and successful collaboration on complex design projects.

How does a Microstation Designer typically collaborate with engineers and other team members during a project?

Microstation Designers work closely with engineers, architects, and project managers throughout the project lifecycle. They are often responsible for translating engineering sketches and specifications into detailed CAD drawings, updating plans based on feedback, and ensuring all design changes are accurately reflected. Regular coordination meetings, shared digital workspaces, and version control tools help facilitate smooth communication and workflow. This collaborative environment ensures that the final designs meet technical standards and project requirements.

Ardurra is a multidisciplinary civil engineering services firm delivering practical, innovative solutions to public-sector clients. Our Houston team works closely with the City of Houston, and other local agencies on critical public infrastructure projects that directly impact more than seven million residents across the Houston region.
Primary Function:
The Senior Civil Designer IV independently performs the most advanced civil drafting and design tasks in support of municipal utility and public works projects in the Houston area. This role works closely with engineers to translate hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses into clear, constructible plan sets for sanitary sewer, water pipelines serving water and wastewater treatment facilities, force mains, and storm drainage systems.
This position is primarily focused on municipal utility infrastructure rather than roadway or TXDOT transportation design.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Prepare advanced civil design drawings for municipal water, wastewater, sanitary sewer, force mains, and storm drainage systems, including plan-and-profile sheets, details, and quantities
  • Develop design deliverables using AutoCAD and Civil 3D primarily for utility, conveyance, and drainage infrastructure (experience with MicroStation or OpenRoads Designer is a plus)
  • Apply City of Houston standards and Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM) criteria; limited TXDOT coordination as required
  • Support the preparation of plan and profile drawings informed by hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses provided by engineering staff
  • Coordinate utility layouts with existing infrastructure, drainage systems, and limited roadway elements as needed
  • Provide technical guidance and quality review for junior designers and drafters
  • Interface with project engineers, project managers, and municipal clients to support project delivery
  • Assist with constructability reviews, quantity takeoffs, estimates, and preparation of technical documents
  • Maintain CAD standards, file organization, and data integrity throughout the project lifecycle

Education & Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or Technical Certificate preferred
  • 10+ years of total related design experience
  • Strong emphasis on municipal utility and public works projects
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the City of Houston or similar municipal agencies is strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to lead / mentor technical staff
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D for municipal utility, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage design
  • MicroStation and/or OpenRoads Designer experience a plus but not required
  • Working understanding of H&H (hydrologic and hydraulic) related to storm drainage and utility infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of municipal utility standards and public works design practices
