Job description

Overview
Are you an experienced software engineer who is passionate about Windows and enjoys owning products from design through launch? Join the Microsoft Store team to solve complex challenges at consumer scale, help users discover the experiences they need, and empower developers to innovate, differentiate, and grow their businesses on Windows.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Microsoft Store team, you will own significant parts of the Store client experience on Windows, including acquisition, install, and update flows that millions of customers depend on every day. You will drive technical design and ship features from end to end. You will also work directly with developers and partner teams across Windows, commerce, and the developer platform to diagnose issues that cross client, service, and operating system boundaries.
Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and ship features in the Microsoft Store client on Windows, owning the full lifecycle from technical design through release, telemetry review, and follow-up.
  • Own the reliability and performance of acquisition, install, and update flows, including production troubleshooting, incident response, service health monitoring, and a healthy on-call rotation.
  • Set technical direction within your areas, including modernization of legacy code paths, platform and architecture transitions, and patterns that balance reliability, performance, maintainability, and cost.
  • Partner with developers and partner engineering teams to investigate app-specific issues, distinguish intended product behavior from defects, and drive fixes to the right owner.
  • Ensure engineering quality, craftsmanship, security, privacy, and compliance through effective test strategy, code health, regression prevention, automation, and instrumentation.
  • Mentor engineers, raise the bar through code and design review, and bring clarity and momentum to ambiguous problems through resolution.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Python.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Windows client development, including the app packaging, deployment, and app model stack.
  • Experience shipping and operating a consumer-scale client application, including live-site ownership, on-call, and telemetry-driven quality improvement.
  • Solid proficiency in C++ or C# within a large, long-lived production codebase.
  • Experience with app distribution or commerce systems, such as catalog, licensing, entitlement, or update services.
  • Experience debugging complex problems across process, service, and operating system boundaries using logs, traces, and diagnostics tooling.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading a workstream without formal management responsibility.
