Job Summary
The ALFA Eminent Scholar Graduate Fellow is responsible for:
- research activities such as collection, identification, photography, and database management for protozoans and microinvertebrates collected from the Gulf of Mexico and freshwater habitats;
- protozoan isolation, meiofauna isolation (centrifugation), counting, histochemistry and microscopic preparation of samples as assigned;
- laboratory maintenance and cleaning, inventory, assisting with scientific articles, writing drafts, running statistical tests., and creating maps using GIS. The applicant will be trained in these areas of responsibility.
This position has a starting date of May 25th or August 1st, 2026 depending on the applicant's availability.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Biology or Environmental Science
2. Must be a Troy University graduate student enrolled in at least half time (unconditional admission)
3. Must be a thesis graduate student seeking a Master's degree in Environmental Science or Biological Science in the ALFA scholar lab.
4. Must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA
Please note: Student positions are FICA/Medicare exempt only if students are enrolled in classes in the semester work is performed. To qualify for the FICA/Medicare exemption, you must be enrolled on a half-time basis for the Fall, Spring, or Summer
Preferred Qualifications
1. Good microscopy skills
2. Good computer skills
Will this position require driving (personal vehicle, university vehicle, utility vehicle, or golf cart) in order to perform the job duties?
Driving may be necessary but is not a primary responsibility
Work Hours
Research activities not involving travel must be performed during business hours, 8AM-5PM, Mon-Fri. The workload will be 20 hours/week.
List any hazardous conditions or physical demands required by this position
Ability to work in streams, rivers, and lakes and under environmental extremes. Ability to work on a research vessel at sea collecting samples.
