Micro Systems Engineering information

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Micro Systems Engineering?

A Micro Systems Engineer typically spends their days designing micro-scale devices, running simulations, analyzing system performance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate microsystems into larger products. The role often involves hands-on work in cleanroom environments for device fabrication and testing, as well as documenting processes and troubleshooting issues as they arise. Engineers regularly consult with project managers, researchers, and manufacturing specialists to ensure high-quality outputs and timely project delivery. This combination of technical, collaborative, and project-based tasks makes the role dynamic and central to developing cutting-edge microtechnology solutions.

What is a Micro Systems Engineering job?

A Micro Systems Engineering job involves designing, developing, and optimizing miniature systems that integrate mechanical, electrical, and software components. These systems are often used in medical devices, sensors, and microelectronics. Engineers in this field work on microfabrication, system integration, and performance testing to ensure reliability and efficiency. They collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to innovate and improve technology at a microscale.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Micro Systems Engineering position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Micro Systems Engineering, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, microfabrication processes, and systems integration, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like COMSOL or ANSYS, and experience with cleanroom protocols are often required, and certifications in microelectronics can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams are highly valued soft skills. These competencies enable effective design, development, and troubleshooting of miniaturized systems, which are critical for innovation and quality in this specialized field.

Your New Job

Job Summary:

Congruex is launching a new volumetric concrete division supporting micro-trench fiber optic installations—and we’re looking for a hands-on Project Manager to help build it.

This is not a job for someone maintaining an existing system. This role is for a builder who understands volumetric/mobile mix operations, trench backfill, and fast-paced underground construction, and wants ownership in standing up crews, trucks, suppliers, and processes from day one. You will play a key role in launching, stabilizing, and scaling a new internal operation that supports multiple crews and markets.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day volumetric concrete operations supporting micro-trenching and fiber installs
  • Coordinate production, scheduling, and logistics between trenching crews and mobile batch trucks
  • Source and manage materials (cement, aggregates, admixtures) and vendors
  • Assist in evaluating mobile batching vs. silo-based batching strategies
  • Ensure consistent flowable fill/backfill quality and compliance with project specs
  • Track job costs, production rates, and productivity metrics
  • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and cost controls
  • Develop operational workflows, safety standards, and quality processes
  • Support crew expansion, equipment additions, and geographic growth

Required Skills/Abilities:

General

  • 5+ years in concrete operations, underground utilities, or volumetric batching
  • Hands-on experience with volumetric trucks or mobile batch plants
  • Strong understanding of trench backfill, CLSM, flowable fill, or specialty mixes
  • Ability to work independently and make field-level decisions
  • Experience coordinating multiple crews in active construction environments

Preferred

  • Previous startup or greenfield operations experience
  • Exposure to P&L tracking or job cost management
  • Experience supporting fiber, telecom, or municipal infrastructure work
  • CDL or familiarity working alongside CDL drivers

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is typically preferred in:
  • Construction Management
  • Civil Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Building Science
  • Minimum 5 years Project Management experience.
  • I–3 years of experience in construction or project coordination roles.
  • Internships, co-op programs, or assistant roles during college are often counted toward experience.
  • Typical early roles include:
    • Assistant Project Manager
    • Field Engineer
    • Estimator
    • Scheduler

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able and willing to work indoors and outdoors, subject to inclement weather conditions
  • Must be able to maintain visual and audible contact with other crewman and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement
  • Must be able to work around heavy equipment and machinery
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit or be in other physically demanding positions for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work while wearing safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and any applicable safety gear
