What is a metrology test engineer?

Metrology Test Engineers are professionals who specialize in the science of measurement, ensuring that instruments and systems are precise and accurate. They develop, implement, and maintain testing protocols for measuring equipment across various industries, such as manufacturing, aerospace, and electronics. Their work involves calibrating instruments, analyzing measurement data, and troubleshooting equipment issues to maintain quality standards. Metrology Test Engineers play a crucial role in quality assurance and regulatory compliance within organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metrology test engineer?

To thrive as a Metrology Test Engineer, you need a strong background in physics, engineering, or a related field, with expertise in dimensional measurement and quality assurance. Familiarity with coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), statistical process control (SPC) software, and industry standards like ISO 17025 is highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure precise measurement, compliance with quality standards, and the reliability of manufactured products.

What are some common challenges faced by metrology test engineers when ensuring measurement accuracy in a production environment?

Metrology Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as calibrating equipment to maintain precise measurements, addressing environmental factors like temperature and humidity that can impact accuracy, and troubleshooting inconsistencies in test results. They must also ensure compliance with industry standards and work closely with production and quality teams to resolve any discrepancies quickly. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential for identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

What is the difference between Metrology Test Engineer vs Calibration Technician?

AspectMetrology Test EngineerCalibration Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or Physics, certifications like CCT or ISO 17025 familiarityTechnical diploma or associate degree, calibration certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning tests, analyzing measurement data, developing calibration proceduresPerforming routine calibrations, maintaining calibration records, troubleshooting equipment
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive for quality assuranceCommonly employed in laboratories, manufacturing plants, and maintenance facilities

While both roles focus on measurement accuracy, Metrology Test Engineers develop testing protocols and analyze data, whereas Calibration Technicians perform routine calibrations and maintain equipment. Both are essential for ensuring measurement precision in industrial settings.

Job description

At Bloom Energy, our vision for a world powered by clean, reliable, and affordable energy is more than just a dream-we're making it reality.

For over two decades, we've been at the forefront of the global energy transition, pioneering solutions that empower critical industries to thrive in a rapidly digitizing, energy-intensive world. From revolutionizing power for AI-driven data centers to ensuring resilience for hospitals, electric grids, manufacturing facilities, and utilities, our solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) technologies are redefining what's possible by delivering energy abundance for all. With more than 30,000 fuel cell modules deployed worldwide, we are the trusted partner for Fortune 100 companies and innovators alike. Our cutting-edge solutions enable unparalleled "time-to-power" capabilities, reliability, and sustainability, ensuring our customers remain ahead in a world where soaring energy demand and intensifying energy scarcity are rapidly becoming the new norm.

At Bloom, we thrive on collaboration, bold thinking, and relentless innovation. We believe that, together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future while tackling the most pressing challenges of the 21st century.

We are looking for a Metrology Engineer to join our team in one of today's most exciting technologies. This role will report to the Senior Manager, Metrology and will be based in Fremont, CA. This is a fully on-site, in factory role.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead metrology support for capacity expansion projects: specify, justify, and implement metrology equipment for new lines, line duplications, and line moves.

  • Conduct Measurement System Analyses (MSA/Gage R&R, bias, linearity, stability) for new and existing gauges; drive improvement or replacement of inadequate systems.

  • Specify, select, and validate production-ready measurement systems (CMMs, optical/vision systems, laser/line scanners, profilometers, inline gauges, leak/flow/pressure test systems, electrical test stands).

  • Support day-to-day production: troubleshoot measurement issues, resolve non-conformances, participate in root cause analyses, and support corrective and preventive actions.

  • Provide design-for-metrology input to product and process engineering, including GD&T, tolerancing, and fixturing for manufacturability and inspection efficiency.

  • Collaborate with suppliers to define incoming inspection requirements, qualify supplier measurement systems, and address dimensional and performance issues.

  • Develop and maintain metrology work instructions, calibration procedures, and standard operating methods for technicians and operators.

  • Train and mentor production, quality, and engineering teams in GD&T, measurement techniques, gauge use, and data interpretation.

  • Monitor and analyze production measurement data (SPC, Cp/Cpk, trend analysis) to detect drifts, reduce variation, and support continuous improvement and yield enhancement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, Materials, or related Engineering field; Physics or similar considered with strong relevant experience.

  • 1-2 years of metrology, dimensional engineering, or test engineering experience in a production/manufacturing environment (automotive, aerospace, energy, electronics, fuel cells, or similar)

  • Hands-on experience with factory measurement systems (CMM, optical/vision systems, laser gauges, height gauges, air gauges, surface/profile measurement, leak/flow/pressure/electrical test equipment).

  • Proven experience running and interpreting MSA/Gage R&R and using outcomes to improve gauges and processes.

  • Proficiency with statistical tools and methods for production data (SPC, capability analysis, DOE, regression) using tools such as Minitab, JMP, or similar.

  • Demonstrated success implementing or upgrading metrology systems during line startups, ramp-ups, or capacity expansions.

  • Strong track record of cross-functional work with production, automation, maintenance, quality, and design teams.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with automated inspection systems, machine vision, inline gauging, and integration with PLCs/MES/QMS.

  • Strong digital mindset with demonstrated ability to effectively use AI tools (e.g., coding assistants, data analysis, document automation) in an engineering environment.

  • Experience introducing metrology into greenfield or immature process areas and taking them to stable, statistically controlled operation.

  • Experience with PFMEA, control plans, and structured problem-solving (8D, A3, DMAIC).

  • Familiarity with SQL, Python, C++
