What is a Metrology Inspector?

A Metrology Inspector is a professional responsible for measuring and inspecting parts or products to ensure they meet precise specifications and quality standards. They use specialized equipment, such as calipers, micrometers, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM), to verify dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes. Metrology Inspectors play a key role in quality control within manufacturing and engineering environments, helping to maintain product consistency and compliance with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metrology Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metrology Inspector, you need a solid understanding of measurement principles, precision inspection techniques, and typically a background in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as calipers, micrometers, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and relevant calibration software is essential, along with certifications like ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) being advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong documentation and communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure that products meet strict quality standards and regulatory requirements, directly impacting safety and customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Metrology Inspector vs Quality Control Inspector?

AspectMetrology InspectorQuality Control Inspector
CertificationsCalibration and metrology certificationsQuality assurance certifications (e.g., ASQ)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, labs, precision measurement settingsFactories, production lines, inspection areas
Job FocusMeasuring and calibrating tools, ensuring measurement accuracyInspecting products for defects, adherence to standards
Common UsageUsed in industries requiring precise measurements like aerospace, automotiveUsed across manufacturing sectors to ensure product quality

While both roles involve quality and precision, a Metrology Inspector specializes in measurement calibration and ensuring measurement accuracy, whereas a Quality Control Inspector focuses on inspecting finished products for defects and compliance. Both roles are essential in manufacturing but serve different aspects of quality assurance.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Metrology Inspector during the inspection process?

Metrology Inspectors often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex technical drawings, maintaining calibration standards for a variety of measurement instruments, and ensuring precise documentation of results. They must also manage tight production deadlines while upholding strict quality standards, which can require effective communication with engineering, production, and quality assurance teams. Staying current with evolving measurement technologies and industry regulations is essential to address these challenges successfully.

Job description

About The Role
Metrology Engineer supports manufacturing and quality operations by developing, executing, and sustaining measurement and inspection methods used to verify product compliance to engineering drawings, specifications, and CTQ requirements. This role focuses on inspection program development, measurement system capability, and data analysis, enabling reliable inspection execution across incoming, in-process, and supplier quality activities.
The Metrology Engineer works closely with Metrology Technicians, Quality, Manufacturing, and Supplier Engineering teams to translate design requirements into executable inspection approaches. This position applies statistical methods and measurement system analysis to ensure inspection accuracy, repeatability, and process capability, while supporting production ramps and continuous improvement initiatives in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
What You Will Do
  • Develop, validate, and maintain measurement programs for CMM, vision, and optical inspection systems.
  • Support Incoming, In-Process, and Supplier Quality inspection activities, including print review and CTQ interpretation.
  • Perform root cause analysis on measurement and inspection-related nonconformances; support CAPA implementation.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, and Supplier Engineering to ensure inspection readiness during product ramps.
  • Create SOPs, inspection documentation, and work instructions; train technicians as needed.
  • Execute SPC, Cp/Cpk, GR&R, and Measurement System Analysis (MSA) to ensure inspection reliability and process capability.
  • Translate GD&T requirements into executable inspection routines and inspection plans.
  • Support calibration activities and ensure measurement compliance with ISO and internal quality standards.
  • Analyze inspection data to identify trends, variation drivers, and improvement opportunities.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 6+ years of experience in metrology, inspection engineering, or manufacturing quality.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T, CMM programming, and SPC methodologies.
  • Experience with CMM and vision systems (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso, OGP, MicroVu, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience performing GR&R, MSA, and interpreting Cp/Cpk results.
  • Experience working in high-volume manufacturing or complex supply chain environments (EMS/ODM preferred).
  • Proficiency with statistical tools such as Minitab or JMP.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with liquid-cooled hardware, enclosures, or high-speed interconnect components.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt.
