What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in government metrology roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in government metrology often encounter challenges such as staying updated with evolving international measurement standards, ensuring compliance across diverse industries, and managing limited resources for equipment and training. Collaboration with other regulatory bodies and ongoing professional development are essential to address these issues. Additionally, clear communication with stakeholders and robust documentation practices help maintain accuracy and trust in government measurement systems.

What are Metrology Government jobs?

Metrology Government jobs involve working in agencies or departments that oversee the science of measurement. Professionals in these roles develop, maintain, and enforce measurement standards to ensure accuracy and consistency in trade, industry, and scientific research. They may also contribute to setting and updating national or international measurement regulations, perform inspections, or provide technical expertise in metrology. These jobs are crucial for maintaining public trust and safety in measurements used in commerce, health, and the environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Metrology Government role, and why are they important?

To excel in a Metrology Government position, you need a strong background in measurement science, physics, or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in calibration or quality assurance. Familiarity with industry standards (such as ISO/IEC 17025), precision measurement instruments, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for ensuring compliance and accurate reporting. These skills and qualifications are essential to maintain national measurement standards, ensure regulatory compliance, and support public trust in measurement accuracy.

What is the difference between Metrology Government vs Metrology Technician?

AspectMetrology GovernmentMetrology Technician
CertificationsOften requires certifications like ISO/IEC 17025, government-specific credentialsTypically requires calibration and measurement certifications, such as NIST or ANSI certifications
Work EnvironmentGovernment labs, regulatory agencies, public institutionsManufacturing facilities, calibration labs, private companies
Employer & Industry UsageGovernment agencies, national standards organizationsPrivate sector, manufacturing, calibration services
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for regulatory compliance and standards enforcementCompared for hands-on calibration and measurement tasks

Metrology Government professionals focus on regulatory standards, compliance, and working within government agencies, often requiring specialized certifications. Metrology Technicians perform calibration and measurement tasks in various industries, emphasizing practical skills. Both roles involve measurement accuracy but differ in work environment and certification requirements.

Job Description:

Position Summary, Metrology Engineer

NY Creates is seeking a highly skilled Semiconductor Metrology Engineer specializing in High-NA EUV lithography to support next-generation semiconductor technology development. This role focuses on advanced metrology solutions for enabling precise process control, yield improvement, and characterization of EUV patterning processes.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in EUV-related metrology techniques, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration with lithography, process integration, and equipment teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and optimize metrology strategies for High-NA EUV lithography processes
  • Characterize critical dimension (CD), overlay, line edge roughness (LER), and stochastic defects at advanced nodes
  • Evaluate and deploy cutting-edge metrology tools (e.g., CD-SEM, scatterometry, actinic inspection, e-beam inspection)
  • Collaborate with lithography and process teams to understand EUV resist behavior, exposure variability, and pattern fidelity
  • Analyze large datasets to identify process trends, variability sources, and yield-impacting issues
  • Drive continuous improvement in measurement accuracy, precision, and throughput
  • Work closely with equipment vendors to qualify and optimize metrology tools for High-NA EUV applications
  • Develop automated data analysis pipelines and reporting dashboards
  • Contribute to technical documentation, best practices, and knowledge sharing
  • Other reasonable duties assigned
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications, Metrology Engineer

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field
  • 7+ years (BS) or 5+ years (MS) or 1-3 years (PhD) of experience in semiconductor metrology or lithography
  • Strong understanding of EUV lithography fundamentals and challenges (e.g., stochastic effects, photon shot noise, resist chemistry)
  • Experience with data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, JMP, or similar)
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and data-driven problem solving
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills

Hands-on experience with semiconductor metrology tools such as:

  • CD-SEM
  • Optical CD (OCD) / Scatterometry
  • Overlay metrology systems

This position is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check; this position may require annual background checks.

Preferred Qualifications, Metrology Engineer

  • In-depth knowledge of EUV/High NA EUV lithography, mask technologies, and defect inspection
  • Knowledge of advanced patterning techniques (e.g., multi-patterning, self-aligned processes)
  • Familiarity with optical inspection systems, actinic metrology and EUV mask inspection
  • Experience with stochastic defect analysis and mitigation strategies
  • Exposure to machine learning applications in metrology or process control
  • Strong communication skills, ability to work in a team, and ability to lead in a fast-paced R&D environment.
