Position Summary
The Manufacturing Quality Inspector / Metrology Coordinator is responsible for performing receiving, in-process, and final inspections to ensure products and materials conform to specified requirements, customer expectations, and applicable regulatory standards. This position supports the effectiveness of the Quality Management System (QMS) through inspection activities, internal auditing, calibration and metrology program administration, nonconformance identification, and continuous improvement initiatives.
The position plays a critical role in maintaining compliance with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, applicable regulatory requirements, and company quality objectives by ensuring the integrity of inspection processes, measurement systems, electronic inspection records, and quality data.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Receiving Inspection
- Perform receiving inspection of purchased materials, components, subassemblies, and services according to approved inspection plans, specifications, drawings, purchase orders, and quality requirements.
- Verify supplier documentation including Certificates of Conformance (CoC), Certificates of Analysis (CoA), material certifications, calibration certificates, and other required quality records.
- Evaluate received materials for conformance to engineering drawings, specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Document inspection results and disposition incoming materials within ERP/MRP systems and quality electronic records.
- Identify, document, segregate, and process nonconforming materials in accordance with established procedures.
- Participate in supplier quality investigations and corrective actions as requested.
- Conduct in-process and final inspections of manufactured products, assemblies, and devices to verify compliance with requirements.
- Perform dimensional, visual, functional, and documentation inspections using approved inspection methods and equipment.
- Verify product traceability, labeling, packaging, and documentation requirements.
- Review Device History Records (DHR), production travelers, routers, inspection reports, and manufacturing records for completeness and accuracy where applicable.
- Ensure inspection and test records are complete, accurate, and maintained according to document retention requirements.
- Release conforming products for shipment in accordance with established procedures and delegated authority.
- Initiate nonconformance reports (NCRs) when product or process requirements are not met.
- Assist with containment activities and segregation of nonconforming materials.
- Participate in investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action activities.
- Verify implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions when assigned.
- Serve as the site Metrology Coordinator and administrator for the calibration management program.
- Maintain inventory and status of all inspection, measuring, and test equipment (IM&TE).
- Schedule and coordinate internal and external calibrations to ensure equipment remains within required calibration intervals.
- Review calibration certificates for compliance with applicable standards and traceability requirements.
- Maintain calibration records and calibration database.
- Ensure equipment is labeled and controlled to prevent unintended use of out-of-calibration devices.
- Conduct calibration status audits and equipment recalls when required.
- Assist with measurement uncertainty evaluations and gauge capability assessments as applicable.
- Recommend replacement, repair, or retirement of measurement equipment when necessary.
- Participate as an internal auditor in accordance with the Internal Audit Program.
- Conduct process, product, and system audits against ISO 9001, ISO 13485, company procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare audit plans, checklists, audit reports, and follow-up activities.
- Document audit findings, observations, and opportunities for improvement.
- Verify effectiveness of corrective actions resulting from audit findings.
- Support external audits, customer audits, certification audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Maintain inspection records, calibration records, audit records, and quality documentation.
- Ensure quality records are completed accurately and retained in accordance with procedural requirements.
- Assist with document reviews and updates as required.
- Support implementation and maintenance of electronic quality systems and databases.
- Participate in quality improvement projects and Lean initiatives.
- Assist in analysis of inspection trends, defects, scrap, rework, supplier quality issues, and customer complaints.
- Identify opportunities for improving inspection effectiveness, measurement systems, and quality processes.
- Support CAPA and risk management activities as assigned.
- Comply with all company safety, environmental, and quality policies.
- Follow applicable EHS requirements and use required personal protective equipment.
- Support a culture of quality, compliance, product safety, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Quality, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing, Technical Sciences, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of quality inspection experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Medical device, aerospace, electronics, instrumentation, or regulated manufacturing experience preferred.
- Experience administering calibration or metrology programs preferred.
- Internal auditor experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Quality Systems
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
- Understanding of nonconformance control, CAPA, risk-based thinking, and document control principles.
- Knowledge of Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
- Proficient in dimensional inspection methods and inspection techniques.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment including:
- Calipers
- Micrometers
- Height gauges
- Pin gauges
- Dial indicators
- Optical comparators
- Digital measuring equipment
- Knowledge of calibration principles and measurement traceability.
- Familiarity with ANSI/NCSL Z540, ISO 17025 concepts, or equivalent metrology practices.

- Ability to perform objective process and system audits.
