Metering information

What is metering?

Metering jobs involve the installation, maintenance, and reading of meters that measure utilities such as electricity, gas, or water. Professionals in this field ensure that meters are functioning accurately so that customers are billed correctly for their usage. They may also be responsible for troubleshooting faulty meters, replacing outdated devices, and sometimes interacting with customers to answer questions about their meter readings. Metering technicians often work for utility companies or municipal agencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metering technician?

To thrive as a Metering Technician, you need a strong understanding of electrical principles, metering technology, and typically a technical diploma or certification in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), meter testing equipment, and utility data management systems is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurate installations and customer interactions. These skills ensure precise data collection, regulatory compliance, and reliable service for utility providers and consumers.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in metering roles, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in metering roles often encounter challenges such as ensuring the accuracy of meter readings, troubleshooting technical issues with metering equipment, and keeping up with evolving technology standards. They may also face logistical difficulties while accessing meters in remote or hard-to-reach locations. Overcoming these challenges typically involves staying current with manufacturer training, following strict quality control procedures, and leveraging digital tools for remote monitoring and diagnostics. Collaborating closely with engineering and customer service teams also helps address technical and customer-related concerns efficiently.

What is the difference between Metering vs Meter Technician?

AspectMeteringMeter Technician
CredentialsOften requires technical certifications in electrical or utility systemsRequires technical certifications, often including electrical or instrumentation licenses
Work EnvironmentInvolves monitoring, analyzing, and managing utility or energy dataHands-on installation, maintenance, and repair of meters and related equipment
Employer & IndustryUtilities, energy providers, industrial facilitiesUtility companies, electrical contractors, industrial plants
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles related to energy measurement and data analysisLooking for technical roles focused on installing and maintaining meters

Metering primarily involves monitoring and analyzing energy or utility data, often in a supervisory or analytical capacity. In contrast, Meter Technicians focus on the hands-on installation, maintenance, and repair of meters. Both roles require technical certifications and work within utility or energy industries, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.

How do you become a metering?

To become a metering technician or specialist, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with technical training or an apprenticeship in electrical or mechanical systems. Relevant skills include understanding of meters, electrical safety, and troubleshooting, and certifications such as OSHA safety training or industry-specific licenses can enhance job prospects.

Is being a metering technician a stressful job?

Metering technicians often work outdoors and may face physical demands, safety risks, and tight schedules, which can contribute to stress. The job requires attention to detail, technical skills, and sometimes irregular hours, but stress levels vary depending on workload and work environment.

The Automation Systems Group is responsible for the design, construction and support of cutting-edge data center automation and control infrastructure. The department collaborates with Operations, Sales, Engineering, Information Technology and Management to ensure the system continues to fulfill Vantage customer requirements. Automation Systems works closely with partner contractors to come up with the best design and helps manage these partners to success by providing accurate requirements, goals, and timelines. In addition to design and construction, we are also responsible for the technical requirements of the Operations department involving troubleshooting, calibrating, and repairing mission critical control systems throughout all Vantage locations.

Position Overview

This role can be based in Phoenix, AZ; Denver, CO; New Albany, OH; Ashburn, VA; Atlanta, GA; San Antonio, TX or Abilene TX, following Vantage's hybrid work policy (3 days in the office; 2 days flexible).

Vantage is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented, hands-on Senior Automation Telemetry Engineer to support telemetry systems development, customer usage tracking, operational data delivery, and internal data needs across Vantage facilities.

This role supports the collection, validation, configuration, and maintenance of telemetry data used by internal teams and external customers. You will review power distribution diagrams, metering specifications, network architecture documents, points lists, configuration sheets, and project documentation to implement and maintain telemetry collection systems for both new and existing facilities.

You will also troubleshoot existing telemetry collection and usage tracking systems in live, mission-critical environments and assist with validation, testing, comissioning, and ongoing support of data center metering infrastructure.

This role requires strong ownership, proactive communication, consistent follow-through, and the ability to manage multiple customer-facing and operational deliverables through completion.

Essential Job Functions

  • Implement and maintain telemetry collection, usage tracking, and operational data applications.

  • Configure and maintain telemetry systems, points lists, configuration sheets, and associated documentation.

  • Support customer telemetry, usage reporting, data validation, and operational reporting requirements.

  • Review, validate, and maintain telemetry data flows to ensure accuracy and availability.

  • Assist in testing, commissioning, and support of telemetry infrastructure.

  • Own assigned deliverables from initiation through completion.

  • Proactively communicate risks, blockers, schedule impacts, and changes in priority.

  • Drive incidents, customer requests, and project tasks through closure.

  • Maintain documentation and supporting artifacts within approved repositories.

  • Support continuous improvement of telemetry standards, data quality, and operational processes.

  • Additional duties as assigned by Management.

Duties

  • Collaborate with Design, Engineering, Finance, Construction, Information Technology, and Site Operations teams.

  • Review project documents including metering specifications, points lists, network architecture diagrams, and configuration sheets.

  • Maintain Telemetry System Architecture Documents and supporting technical records.

  • Prioritize competing operational, support, and project activities in alignment with business and customer priorities.

  • Monitor deliverables to ensure milestones and due dates are achieved, escalating risks when necessary.

  • Maintain visibility of active work through clear documentation, status updates, and communication.

  • Support knowledge sharing, documentation quality, and continuity of support across the team.

  • Provide technical guidance to junior team members and project stakeholders.

Job Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience in Automation Systems, Telemetry, Data Analytics, OT systems, or related fields required; 5-7 years preferred.

  • Data Center experience is strongly preferred, but not required.

  • Understanding of telemetry systems, metering infrastructure, usage tracking methodologies, operational data flows, and data validation practices.

  • Experience maintaining points lists, configuration sheets, tag mappings, telemetry records, or similar technical documentation.

  • Knowledge of Ignition by Inductive Automation is required.

  • Strong knowledge of SQL, Python, and modern telemetry or data integration platforms is required.

  • Strong knowledge of MQTT is preferred.

  • Travel is expected to be 10% but may increase over time as business needs evolve.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliverables in a fast-paced environment while consistently meeting commitments and deadlines.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to track work, identify risks early, and proactively communicate status and impacts.

  • Proven ability to work independently with a high degree of ownership, accountability, and follow-through.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information, priorities, risks, and blockers effectively.

  • Experience managing customer-facing deliverables and balancing competing operational and project priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing business needs, shifting priorities, and evolving customer requirements while maintaining focus on execution and delivery.

  • Strong documentation discipline and experience maintaining technical records, project artifacts, and operational procedures in shared repositories.
