HVAC Mechanic - Facilities Operations and Maintenance

Location: Boulder, CO

Position Summary

LAUKOA is seeking experienced HVAC Mechanics to provide 24/7/365 on-site support for the NIST Boulder campus. The HVAC Mechanic will monitor and maintain HVAC and refrigeration systems, respond to alarms and service calls, conduct mechanical room rounds, perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and support critical Central Utility Plant and campus operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Remain on the NIST Boulder campus while on duty and respond to alarms and notifications within 15 minutes.
  • Support Central Utility Plant operations and respond to campus HVAC alarms, water leaks, equipment failures, and other facility conditions.
  • Perform mechanical room rounds during assigned shifts and document conditions using required daily reports.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on packaged units, split systems, air handling units, pumps, cooling equipment, and related systems.
  • Monitor, review, acknowledge, and physically respond to after-hours Metasys alarms as assigned.
  • Handle refrigerants in accordance with federal requirements and maintain accurate transfer, leak, and recovery records.
  • Notify the COR and management of refrigerant leaks, equipment failures, outages, unsafe conditions, and major repair needs within required timeframes.
  • Complete Maximo work orders, preventive maintenance checklists, readings, repair records, and monthly reporting support.
  • Coordinate continuously with the on-duty Stationary Engineer using contractor-provided radios or other reliable communication equipment.
  • Support preventive maintenance at Boulder and, when assigned, scheduled work at the Fort Collins field site.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of HVAC mechanic experience in commercial, industrial, institutional, or central plant environments.
  • Must hold a current Universal CFC/EPA Section 608 certification.
  • Workers handling refrigerants must meet the applicable Class III technician requirements of 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
  • Experience maintaining packaged HVAC units, air handling units, refrigeration equipment, pumps, controls, and related mechanical systems.
  • Experience with building automation systems and computerized maintenance management systems is preferred.
  • Factory training or certification for Liebert, Data Aire, Carrier, Ingersoll Rand, or other critical equipment is preferred when applicable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong troubleshooting and repair skills for HVAC, refrigeration, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Ability to read job plans, equipment manuals, control information, gauges, and electrical or mechanical diagrams.
  • Knowledge of refrigerant handling, leak response, preventive maintenance, and safe work practices.
  • Ability to complete accurate electronic logs, reports, checklists, and Maximo records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and coordinate with Stationary Engineers, management, and Government personnel.

Security Requirements

  • Must successfully complete all required NIST badging, access, background, and security processes.
  • Must maintain valid credentials and site access for assigned shifts.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, early dismissals, and site closures in support of 24/7/365 operations.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; climb stairs and ladders; bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and work in mechanical spaces.
  • Ability to wear required PPE and work around refrigerants, chemicals, heat, noise, moving equipment, and rooftop or outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, parts, filters, and equipment consistent with safe work practices.

Wage Rate

  • Wage rates and benefits will be determined in accordance with the Local One International Union of Operating Engineers Collective Bargaining Agreement in effect at the time of solicitation. The values shown are estimates and are subject to change.
  • Estimated hourly rate between $40.00 $50.00 per hour
  • Includes an estimated $1,250 per month towards Health and Welfare
  • Includes an estimated $3.50 per hour towards retirement
