What is metal framing?

A Metal Framing job involves constructing the structural framework of buildings using lightweight steel or aluminum components instead of traditional wood. Metal framers read blueprints, measure and cut materials, and assemble framing structures for walls, ceilings, and floors. This method is commonly used in commercial and residential construction due to its durability, resistance to pests, and fire safety benefits. Workers in this field must have skills in measuring, cutting, fastening, and interpreting construction plans.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in metal framing?

To thrive in Metal Framing, you need solid experience with blueprint reading, precise measurement, and construction mathematics, along with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with power tools, laser levels, and, in some cases, OSHA safety certifications is typically required. Dependability, teamwork, and good communication skills are valuable soft skills in this position. These combined skills ensure projects are completed accurately, safely, and efficiently while maintaining strong working relationships on the job site.

What are the typical work environments and team structures for metal framing?

Metal framing professionals usually work on construction sites, which may be residential, commercial, or industrial, and they often work both indoors and outdoors depending on the project. Teams are generally structured with a foreman or supervisor leading a crew of metal framers, drywall installers, and other tradespeople, requiring frequent collaboration to meet project timelines. Work hours can vary based on project deadlines, and overtime is sometimes expected. Many employers offer opportunities to advance into supervisory roles or specialize in areas such as project management or quality control. Having strong teamwork and communication skills helps ensure efficient progress and a safe environment for everyone involved.

Austin, Texas | Full-Time | Permanent | $33–$35/HR + Overtime

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A TRUE COMMERCIAL METAL FRAMING FOREMAN

Building Team Solutions is looking for an experienced Senior Commercial Metal Stud Framing Foreman to join a growing commercial construction operation in the Austin area.

This is NOT a residential framing position.
This is NOT a drywall finisher position.

We need someone with strong commercial light-gauge metal framing and exterior metal framing experience who has already led crews on large commercial projects.

If you can walk onto a commercial jobsite, read the plans, lay out the work, organize your crew, solve field problems, and keep production moving — we want to talk to you.

PAY & BENEFITS

  • $33–$35 per hour, depending on experience
  • Full-time, permanent position
  • Overtime available
  • Lucrative bonus program
  • PTO / Paid Time Off
  • Benefits package
  • Long-term employment
  • Opportunity to advance into a Superintendent position
  • Steady commercial work in the Austin area

NO PER DIEM.
Candidates must be local to Austin/Central Texas or be willing to relocate on their own.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

You will be responsible for helping lead commercial framing crews while remaining a working foreman when needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead commercial metal stud framing crews
  • Interior light-gauge metal framing
  • Exterior light-gauge framing
  • Curtain wall / exterior bypass framing
  • Cold-formed metal framing
  • Read and interpret commercial construction plans
  • Perform and understand layout
  • Coordinate manpower and daily production
  • Work with your own tools when necessary
  • Coordinate with Superintendents, Project Managers, GCs and other trades
  • Identify field conflicts and production problems
  • Maintain quality, productivity and safety
  • Make sure materials and manpower are available
  • Train and direct crew members
  • Keep the project moving and meet schedule requirements

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Commercial metal framing experience
  • Strong experience with light-gauge metal framing
  • Experience with heavy-gauge / structural steel framing
  • Experience with exterior metal framing / curtain wall / bypass framing
  • Previous experience as a Foreman, Working Foreman, Leadman or Senior Framing Leader
  • Ability to read commercial plans
  • Ability to perform layout
  • Ability to lead and manage a framing crew
  • Ability and willingness to work hands-on
  • Reliable transportation
  • Professional work history
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO:

Knows commercial framing.

You should be able to look at a set of plans and understand what needs to happen in the field.

You should know how to organize a crew, maintain production, identify problems before they become major issues, and communicate with the Superintendent and other trades.

Most importantly, you need to have actually led commercial metal framing crews.

INTERVIEW

Qualified candidates should be prepared to discuss:

  • Commercial framing projects you have worked on
  • Size and type of projects
  • Crew sizes you have supervised
  • Light-gauge and exterior framing experience
  • Curtain wall / bypass framing experience
  • Your layout experience
  • Companies and projects you have worked for
  • References from previous employers
  • Availability to start

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

This is intended to be a long-term position, not a short-term job.

The right person will have the opportunity to grow into a Commercial Superintendent role within approximately 12 months, based on performance and leadership ability.
