What is a metadata specialist?

Metadata specialists are professionals responsible for creating, managing, and maintaining metadata, which is data that describes and provides information about other data. They work to ensure that digital assets, documents, or datasets are accurately categorized, searchable, and retrievable by assigning standardized descriptions and tags. Metadata specialists often work in libraries, archives, museums, or organizations with large digital collections, and play a key role in data governance and information management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metadata specialist?

To thrive as a Metadata Specialist, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of metadata standards and cataloging principles, often supported by a degree in library science, information science, or a related field. Familiarity with cataloging tools, metadata management systems, and standards like Dublin Core or MARC is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate data organization and retrieval, which are critical for maintaining data integrity and supporting information discovery.

What are some typical challenges faced by metadata specialists when managing large datasets, and how can they be addressed?

Metadata specialists often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data standards, incomplete metadata entries, and integrating metadata from multiple sources. These issues can make it difficult to ensure data discoverability and usability. Addressing them typically involves establishing clear metadata standards, using automated tools for validation, and collaborating closely with data owners and IT teams to maintain consistency. Regular training and documentation updates also help in keeping metadata practices aligned across the organization.

What is the difference between Metadata vs Data Analyst?

AspectMetadataData Analyst
Required CredentialsKnowledge of data management, basic understanding of databasesBachelor's degree in statistics, data science, or related field
Work EnvironmentData management teams, IT departmentsBusiness, finance, marketing teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries for data catalogingUsed in analytics, reporting, decision-making
Common Search & ComparisonUnderstanding data structureAnalyzing data for insights

Metadata involves managing data about data, such as descriptions and structure, while a Data Analyst interprets data to provide insights. Both roles are essential in data management but serve different functions within organizations.

What does a metadata assistant do?

A metadata assistant supports the management and organization of digital information by creating, editing, and maintaining metadata records. They often use tools like content management systems and follow standards such as Dublin Core or MARC to ensure data is accurately described and easily retrievable. Attention to detail and familiarity with data standards are important for this role.

What is a metadata job?

A metadata job involves managing, organizing, and maintaining metadata, which is data that describes other data, to improve data accessibility and usability. Roles often require knowledge of data management tools, standards, and sometimes programming skills to ensure accurate data classification and retrieval.

Job description

Where BIM Meets Digital Construction
We are seeking a BIM/CAD Application Architect to lead the evolution of Hilti's 3D model ecosystem. You will architect and improve how BIM/CAD data flows across design tools, engineering applications, and digital construction platforms, removing manual rework, streamlining large project workflows, and ensuring reliable import/export pipelines.
This role blends deep expertise in Revit, IFC, and BIM/CAD standards with the mindset of a systems thinker and workflow architect. You will work hands on with models, templates, metadata structures, and translation behavior while partnering closely with software, product, and platform teams. Your mission: make BIM/CAD data predictable, governable, and seamlessly consumable across Hilti's digital solutions.
What You'll do
BIM/CAD Architecture & Standards Ownership
  • Define and govern standards for authoring tools and neutral formats (e.g. IFC, DWG/DXF).
  • Establish rules for modeling practices, coordinate systems, naming conventions, levels, and family/parameter structures.
  • Ensure external BIM/CAD content and internal engineering applications consume models consistently and reliably.
Model Import/Export, Interoperability & Data Quality
  • Design and optimize robust import/export pipelines for 2D/3D assets used in engineering, layout, prefabrication, and project services.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to template inconsistencies, metadata loss, large-file performance, and tool to tool translation quirks.
  • Create documentation and guidelines for multi tool interoperability.
  • Work hands on with sample projects, models, and datasets to validate behavior and eliminate manual rework in service workflows.
Model Lifecycle, Registry & Governance
  • Architect a Model Registry enabling controlled intake, semantic versioning, traceability, and structured metadata for 3D assets.
  • Improve, or define where needed, model metadata (discipline, family type, parameters, lineage, usage context) to support scalable reuse across teams.
  • Govern model ingestion from internal groups and external designers.
Evaluate and support adoption of AI Enabled Model Workflows
  • Evaluate emerging AI/ML capabilities for BIM workflows (automated QC, clash prioritization, generative design hints, digital twin analytics).
  • Understand how LLMs, computer vision, and MLops can enhance model checking, metadata extraction, and design to engineering workflows.
  • Partner with data and software teams to integrate AI capabilities into future BIM to Field and digital construction solutions.
Cross Functional Technical Collaboration
  • Work closely with solution architects, software engineering leads, Digital Design teams and UX designers.
  • Translate BIM/CAD domain requirements into technical specifications software teams can implement.
  • Collaborate with developers building Revit based or model driven tooling; familiarity with the Revit API is strongly preferred.
  • Act as the technical liaison for BIM/CAD workflows within our community.
Workflow Leadership & Organizational Enablement
  • Define end to end workflows for model intake, validation, review, approval, and publishing.
  • Produce standards, playbooks, training materials, and guidance for teams working with BIM/CAD data.
  • Operate within Agile or SAFe aligned delivery processes to support coordinated roadmaps and increments.
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
  • This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization or visa sponsorship (including initial, transfer, or extension), and candidates must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and remain authorized for the duration of employment without the need for sponsorship.
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Technology, or Computer Science.
  • 6+ years of BIM leadership with deep hands on expertise in Revit/AutoCAD, including system level planning of BIM/CAD environments.
  • Strong understanding of IFC, DWG/DXF, and interoperability challenges across BIM authoring tools.
  • Experience guiding or integrating AI/ML capabilities into BIM workflows (automation, quality checks, generative suggestions, predictive insights).
  • Working knowledge of LLMs, computer vision methods, MLops concepts, and prompt engineering as applied to model workflows.
  • Familiarity with how software engineering teams operate; understanding of cloud ecosystems.
  • Proven ability to communicate across engineering, product, UX, and data domains
  • Experience in working with a global setup (early/late calls/cultural awareness).
  • Open to travel internationally
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with BIM integrations into engineering or analysis tools, or model driven workflows in downstream applications.
  • Understanding of BIM to Field processes, CAD preparation, layout workflows, and model to construction handover.
  • Exposure to SAFe or scaled Agile environments.
  • Familiarity with different authoring tools
  • Software Development experience
