What is the difference between Mes Semiconductor Manager vs Process Engineer?

AspectMes Semiconductor ManagerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in MES or manufacturing systemsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications in process improvement or manufacturing
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, production floors, MES system managementDesigning, testing, and optimizing manufacturing processes in labs or production
Industry UsageUsed across semiconductor manufacturing facilities for production oversightCommonly employed in process development and optimization in semiconductor fabs

The Mes Semiconductor Manager focuses on overseeing manufacturing execution systems and coordinating production activities, while the Process Engineer concentrates on developing and improving manufacturing processes. Both roles require technical expertise and are integral to semiconductor production, but they differ in scope and daily responsibilities.

What are the main challenges a MES Semiconductor Manager faces when implementing new manufacturing execution systems across multiple fabs?

A MES Semiconductor Manager often encounters challenges such as integrating new MES solutions with legacy systems, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing production, and managing complex data flows between equipment, operators, and IT systems. Additionally, coordinating cross-functional teams—including engineering, production, and IT—requires strong communication and project management skills. Staying up-to-date with evolving semiconductor manufacturing standards and regulatory requirements is also crucial to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MES Semiconductor Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a MES Semiconductor Manager, you need a solid background in semiconductor manufacturing processes, MES (Manufacturing Execution System) expertise, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Experience with MES platforms like Camstar, FabGuard, or Applied Materials systems, and relevant certifications such as Six Sigma or PMP, are highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are crucial for managing cross-functional teams and driving process improvements. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient production, compliance, and continuous improvement in complex semiconductor manufacturing environments.

What is a MES Semiconductor Manager?

A MES (Manufacturing Execution System) Semiconductor Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of MES software in semiconductor manufacturing facilities. This role ensures that production processes are tracked, controlled, and improved using real-time data and automation. The MES Semiconductor Manager collaborates with engineering, IT, and production teams to streamline workflows, boost efficiency, and comply with industry standards. They play a crucial role in integrating MES solutions with other enterprise systems and troubleshooting issues as they arise.

The Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) Support Analyst will utilize foundational knowledge of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and work under general supervision within established processes to support the configuration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of L3Harris MES platforms. The role will assist with functional support, process documentation, troubleshooting, and basic system enhancements across manufacturing operations. The role will perform routine to moderately complex assignments requiring sound judgment and attention to detail, while collaborating with team members and manufacturing/IT stakeholders to share information and support issue resolution. The role will contribute to process improvement efforts by identifying minor updates and providing recommendations for review, in addition to maintaining assigned operational objectives that support broader team goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Support the functional configuration and maintenance of the MES portfolio (FactoryLogix, Eyelit, Solumina, and Zeus) following established standards and best practices.
  • Assist with the analysis of manufacturing processes and help identify basic inefficiencies in areas such as production tracking, quality management, WIP visibility, and data flow.
  • Provide day-to-day functional support to end-users, including troubleshooting, basic training, and guidance on standard MES workflows.
  • Assist in multi-site MES activities, including documentation, testing, and support for Solumina implementations under senior guidance.
  • Help define and document integration requirements between MES, ERP, and PLM systems.
  • Support secure area MES operations by following strict security protocols and assisting with system availability in controlled environments.
  • Develop and maintain basic reports, process flows, and documentation to support performance monitoring and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in change management activities and user acceptance testing for MES enhancements.
  • Ensure MES activities comply with regulatory, quality, and security requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 0 to 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 6 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Foundational understanding of manufacturing processes and shop floor operations, including work order execution, routings, labor tracking, material movement, WIP control, nonconformance tracking, and quality checkpoints.
  • Exposure to production environments and the interaction between operators, manufacturing engineers, quality teams, and IT support in day-to-day shop floor execution.
  • Basic familiarity with discrete manufacturing concepts such as bills of material (BOMs), travelers/work instructions, process flows, rework loops, traceability, and production data collection.
  • Awareness of how MES supports real-time manufacturing activities by improving production visibility, enforcing process compliance, and capturing operational data from the shop floor.
  • Experience through coursework, internships, co-ops, or prior roles supporting manufacturing, operations, industrial engineering, quality, or production environments is preferred.
  • Ability to learn and work within regulated manufacturing settings where accuracy, documentation, process discipline, and adherence to quality and security requirements are critical.
  • Exposure to or basic experience with MES platforms such as Aegis FactoryLogix, Eyelit MES, or iBase-t Solumina.
  • Interest in semiconductor, electronics, aerospace, or regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes and shop floor operations.
