What does a MES engineer do?

A MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining MES solutions that optimize manufacturing operations. They bridge the gap between enterprise systems (such as ERP) and shop floor equipment to improve production efficiency, data collection, and process automation. MES Engineers work with various stakeholders to integrate software, troubleshoot issues, and ensure seamless data flow across manufacturing processes. Their role is critical in enhancing productivity, reducing downtime, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MES engineer?

To thrive as a MES Engineer, you need a solid background in manufacturing processes, information systems, and a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with MES platforms like Siemens SIMATIC IT, Rockwell FactoryTalk, or Wonderware, as well as knowledge of automation, PLCs, and database management, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting system issues. These competencies ensure MES Engineers can effectively bridge the gap between IT and manufacturing, optimize production workflows, and maintain compliant operations.

What are the common responsibilities of a MES engineer on a typical workday?

MES Engineers are usually responsible for configuring, deploying, and maintaining Manufacturing Execution Systems, as well as troubleshooting issues that arise on the shop floor. A typical day may involve gathering user requirements, integrating MES solutions with ERP or automation systems, performing software updates, and supporting production teams with system-related concerns. Collaboration with quality assurance, IT, and manufacturing staff is frequent to ensure seamless operations and compliance with industry standards. This role demands both hands-on technical tasks and ongoing communication with multiple stakeholders to achieve optimal production efficiency.

How to become a MES engineer?

To become a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) engineer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Gaining experience with industrial automation, manufacturing processes, and MES software such as Siemens, Rockwell, or Wonderware is essential, along with developing skills in programming, systems integration, and data analysis. Job description

Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company with the mission of protecting service members and civilians with intelligent systems. Its products include Hivemind autonomy software, V-BAT and X-BATย aircraft, and Aechelon simulation and synthetic reality technologies. With offices and facilities across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, Shield AI's technology actively supports operations worldwide. For more information, visitย www.shield.ai. Follow Shield AI onย LinkedIn,ย X,ย Instagram, andย YouTube.ย

Founded in 2015, Shield AI is building intelligent, autonomous aircraft that protect service members and civilians around the world. As we scale production, we're building more than a factory-we're building an AI-native manufacturing ecosystem that will define the future of aerospace production.ย

Build the AI Factory of the Futureย

We're looking for a Digital Factory Lead to help create one of the world's most advanced manufacturing environments.ย

This role sits at the intersection of manufacturing, software, data, automation, and artificial intelligence. You will define and deploy the digital systems, connected infrastructure, and AI-enabled tools that power aircraft production-transforming factory operations through technology.ย

From implementing our Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to deploying AI-powered manufacturing solutions, you'll help define how autonomous aircraft are built for years to come.ย

ย
What you'll do:
AI-Enabled Manufacturingย
  • Develop and execute Shield AI's AI Manufacturing roadmap.ย
  • Identify opportunities to leverage AI across production, quality, maintenance, supply chain, training, and operational decision-making.ย
  • Deploy AI-powered solutions including intelligent work instructions, manufacturing copilots, predictive maintenance, automated root-cause analysis, and advanced analytics.ย
  • Partner with software and data teams to turn operational challenges into scalable technical solutions.ย
  • Capture and digitize manufacturing knowledge to improve workforce productivity, training, and consistency.ย
Digital Factory Systemsย
  • Lead the deployment, configuration, and continuous improvement of Shield AI's Manufacturing Execution System (MES).ย
  • Establish the digital thread connecting engineering, production, quality, maintenance, and supply chain operations.ย
  • Drive integration between MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, factory automation systems, and manufacturing equipment.ย
Connected Factory Infrastructureย

  • Establish factory-wide connectivity and real-time operational visibility.ย
  • Develop the data ecosystem required to support AI, automation, analytics, and future autonomous manufacturing capabilities.ย
Factory Transformationย
  • Develop and execute Shield AI's Digital Factory roadmap.ย
  • Lead automation initiatives across manufacturing, inspection, testing, and material flow.ย
  • Evaluate emerging technologies including machine vision, digital twins, autonomous inspection, and next-generation manufacturing systems.ย
  • Help define what aircraft manufacturing should look like over the next decade.ย
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, or a related technical discipline.ย
  • 8+ years of experience in digital manufacturing, manufacturing systems, industrial automation, software-enabled operations, or Industry 4.0 environments.ย
  • Experience implementing manufacturing software systems such as MES, QMS, maintenance, analytics, or automation platforms.ย
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing operations, industrial controls, factory automation, and manufacturing data systems.ย
  • Experience working directly with software developers, system integrators, automation engineers, or data teams to deliver production-ready solutions.ย
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex cross-functional initiatives from concept through deployment.ย
Preferred qualifications:
  • Aerospace, defense, automotive, robotics, electronics, or other high-complexity manufacturing experience.ย
  • Experience supporting greenfield factory launches or large-scale factory transformations.ย
  • Experience applying AI, machine learning, advanced analytics, or digital twin technologies in an operational environment.ย
  • Knowledge of AS9100, or other highly controlled manufacturing systems.ย
