What does a merchandiser do?

A merchandiser is a person responsible for the display of products in a store or online. Regardless of whether they work in retail, grocery, or for an online marketplace, merchandisers must coordinate with buying teams and store managers to highlight in-stock and seasonally relevant products. They are expected to monitor product popularity and performance in order to adequately plan upcoming volumes of product stock.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a merchandiser, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Merchandiser, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of retail or supply chain principles, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with inventory management systems, planogram software, and data analysis tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help Merchandisers coordinate with teams and respond to changing retail environments. These skills ensure that products are effectively displayed and stocked, driving sales and optimizing the customer experience.

How do merchandisers typically collaborate with store managers and sales teams to achieve sales goals?

Merchandisers work closely with store managers and sales teams to ensure that products are displayed effectively and align with sales strategies. Regular communication is essential for coordinating promotional activities, restocking merchandise, and adjusting product placements based on inventory levels or sales trends. By sharing insights on customer preferences and sales data, merchandisers help the store team optimize product visibility and maximize revenue. This collaborative approach often involves weekly meetings, joint planning sessions, and on-the-floor adjustments to displays.
