Job description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The sales associate and merchandiser is responsible for day-to-day operations of the store. This includes, but is not limited to, greeting customers, prompt answering of telephones, assisting customers in finding merchandise, direct selling, placing custom or re orders for furniture, bedding, draperies, etc., providing exemplary customer service in person or on the telephone, maintaining a customer and peer-friendly attitude, operating and making sales on the POS system, practicing cash handling techniques, reconciling the cash drawer whenever necessary, helping stock shelves and displays, processing merchandise for sale, assist in unpacking and pricing inventory for sale, assisting management when needed, completing general housekeeping.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS AS FOLLOWS:

  • Provides accurate knowledge to the customer

  • Maintains a positive attitude with customers and coworkers

  • Personalize service to customer by finding home decor and furniture that fits their needs

  • Becomes familiar with store merchandise, vendors, and procedures to better serve customers

  • Operates and follows proper procedures for the POS system and the inventory management process

  • Makes sales using cash, credit cards, checks, traveler’s checks, gift certificates, and store credit

  • Practices responsible cash handling

  • Understands all elements of POS including layaways, refunds, discounts, gift card sales and redemptions, and designer sales and accompanying discounts

  • Understands the process of ordering custom furniture, bedding, and fabric

  • Keeps up to date on knowledge of vendors

  • Maintains store merchandising by cleaning, straightening, and filling areas where merchandise has been sold

  • Takes care of customer shipments via UPS

  • Responsible for cleaning store bathrooms, floors, merchandise, and keeping up with trash removal daily

  • Assists inventory manager with processing and pricing of merchandise and restocking of the store

  • Lifts and moves furniture and other large merchandise in order to completely merchandise the store

  • Provides training to new employees by allowing them to shadow and participate in work activities

  • Meets with clients to assess and determine their needs, color and style preference, lifestyle needs, and budget

  • Remains within clients budget

  • Take measurements of the space to be decorated and prepare a proposed room layout

  • Make cost estimates

  • Show samples of furniture, fabric, and materials to be used

  • Arrange and oversee painting, wallpapering, drapery construction, delivery of merchandise, etc.

  • Select accessories and order furniture as determined with client

  • Follows up on all special orders and keep client abreast of the status of their project

  • Assists in keeping design office organized, clean, and up-to-date

  • Provides assistance and support to store management and owners as needed

EXPERIENCE, ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Previous experience in sales, retail, and/or interior design

  • Ability to manage time and prioritize multiple tasks

  • Ability to interact with customers and vendors in a friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful manner

  • Self motivated and able to excel with minimal supervision

  • Ability to develop and maintain good communication and relationships with every client whether contact was in person or over the phone.

  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50lbs and climb a ladder to merchandise.
