Job description

The Roll Off Driver will be expected to safely operate refuse collection trucks for our Roll off collection routes. These routes include providing prompt and courteous delivery and pick-up service of containers filled with waste or recyclable material, as well as pre and post truck inspections and cleaning. This work is performed under direct supervision, observation, and guidance of the Operations Manager.

Pay: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour
Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
  • Must have a current Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the state in which the position works, with an air-brake endorsement. Requires a safe driving record.
  • Must have at least two (2) year of experience operating a vehicle requiring a CDL
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Working knowledge of refuse collection policies, procedures, guidelines and practices, understanding of Department of Transportation and State requirements for operators of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Manipulate heavy equipment control levers.
  • Follows designated refuse collection routes or work schedule that are subject to change.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Create and maintain written records and service responses.
  • Must be able to speak and read English well enough to communicate with customers, co-workers, dispatch and supervisors
    • understand highway and traffic signals; be able to make legible entries on paperwork.
  • Keen sense of direction with ability to read and understand maps/GPS
  • Monday – Friday work week; Saturday when required by management
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following tasks:
  • Operates vehicle in accordance with Mercado’s Safety Guidelines and OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements as well as all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and documents checks utilizing the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
  • Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service-related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
  • Able to effectively use equipment/technology required to perform the job.
  • Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by Mercado’s or directed by the Operations Manager.
  • Works closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
  • Notifies Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
  • Notifies Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including blocked containers, closed lots, streets, alleyways, or potential safety hazards.
  • Communicates customer requests to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
  • Identifies and reports all containers in need of repair or replacement.
  • Ensures the number of containers on the route reconciles to the service level listed on service list.
  • Completely dumps all containers and leaves the customer’s location clean and free of debris that may have fallen during the operation.
  • Completes and submits customer tickets as required when excessive yardage must be removed.
  • Positions and returns containers on the customer’s property in a manner that ensures lids are properly replaced, enclosure doors are closed and secured, and containers do not block driveway entrances or traffic.
  • Follows route assignments as directed and completes end of day documentation and check out process.
  • Performs all duties as scheduled by Operations Manager or Dispatch and assisting other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
Work Environment:
Listed below are key points regarding the physical requirements, and work environment of the job. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to drive a front-end, side, rear-end, or roll off loading refuse truck, including right-hand driver's position on certain equipment, observing legal and defensive driving practices. Required motor coordination with arm, hand, finger, and leg dexterity.
  • Hear and See in the normal audio range with or without correction
  • Physically able to bend, continuously, at the waist and knees. To perform the essential functions of the job, the following physical abilities are required:
    • exhibit normal range of body motion
    • ability to enter and exit, repetitively, commercial truck to pen doors to corrals and move dumpsters on castors as needed; ensure corral is closed after service
    • ability to climb to top of commercial truck to verify that the load is secured prior to transporting the load to the landfill
  • Ability to regularly push or pull independently (unassisted) up to 50 pounds routinely, and frequently push or pull up to 100 pounds. Occasionally and independently (unassisted), move/push up to 300 pounds.
  • Sitting is required most of the time due to the primary function of driving.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.
  • Normal setting for this job is outdoors and/or driving a video/GPS monitored vehicle.
  • Physically able to work 8 to12 hours in inclement weather conditions
    • Will be exposed to a variety of environment conditions, including wide temperature and weather variations including heat, cold, rain, wind; noise and vibrations, fumes, odors as weather extremes or similar elements most of the workday.
