What is a mental health software developer?

A Mental Health Software Developer (Remote) is a technology professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications aimed at supporting mental health services and initiatives. Working remotely, they may collaborate with clinicians, therapists, or researchers to create tools such as teletherapy platforms, mental health apps, or electronic health record systems. Their work involves writing code, troubleshooting software, and ensuring that solutions are user-friendly, secure, and compliant with relevant healthcare regulations. They play a crucial role in making mental health support more accessible and efficient through technology.

How does a mental health software developer typically collaborate with clinicians and other non-technical team members?

As a remote Mental Health Software Developer, you will often work closely with clinicians, therapists, and other non-technical stakeholders to ensure that the software meets user needs and complies with industry standards. Collaboration usually happens through regular video meetings, shared project management tools, and detailed documentation. It's important to communicate technical concepts in accessible language and be receptive to feedback from clinical experts to create intuitive, effective solutions. Building strong remote communication skills and understanding the nuances of mental health workflows are key to success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mental health software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mental Health Software Developer (Remote), you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), experience with software design, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with healthcare compliance standards (like HIPAA), cloud-based platforms, and relevant frameworks or APIs is also important. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and empathy help developers understand user needs and collaborate effectively with clinicians and stakeholders. These skills and qualities are essential for creating secure, user-friendly solutions that support mental health professionals and their clients.

Job description

Wilson Sonsini is the premier legal advisor to technology, life sciences, and other growth enterprises worldwide. We represent companies at every stage of development, from entrepreneurial start-ups to multibillion-dollar global corporations, as well as the venture firms, private equity firms, and investment banks that finance and advise them. The firm has approximately 1,100 attorneys in 17 offices: 13 in the U.S., two in China, and two in Europe. Our broad spectrum of practices and entrepreneurial spirit allow exceptional opportunities for professional achievement and career growth.

Wilson Sonsini is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to join our Innovations team. The software developers on our team are the primary contributors to Neuron on both the frontend and the backend. You will work closely with a fully remote team of designers, developers, and stakeholders to add new capabilities to the Neuron platform, as well as maintain existing features and infrastructure.

You will be involved in all aspects of software development, including distributed system design. While you will have a high degree of autonomy, collaboration is a core part of the role. You'll work collaboratively with other developers to design and implement changes.

This position is available as a fully remote work schedule.

  • You don't jump to conclusions. You seek to understand problems so that the solutions become self-evident
  • You figure out what conditions allowed the problems to happen and solve those too
  • You sweat the small stuff. If a detail feels off, you notice, say something to the team, build consensus on how to fix it, and then fix it
  • You're comfortable giving direction as well as taking it
  • You verify your work is correct as you're doing it

Requirements

  • 7+ years designing, implementing, and testing software
  • Fluency in software design principles
  • Experience with test-driven development
  • Familiarity with service-oriented architecture and distributed system fundamentals
