Common Search/ComparisonMenswear vs Fashion Designer

Menswear professionals specialize in designing, producing, and selling men's clothing, often working within retail or brand-specific environments. Fashion designers create original clothing and accessory designs across various categories, including menswear, and may work independently or for fashion houses. While both roles require a background in fashion and design, menswear focuses specifically on men's apparel, whereas fashion designers have a broader scope across all clothing types.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Menswear Buyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Menswear Buyer, you need strong analytical skills, trend awareness, and a background in fashion merchandising or retail, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with inventory management systems, point-of-sale platforms, and proficiency in Excel are typically required, along with industry certifications like those from the Fashion Retail Academy. Negotiation, relationship-building, and keen attention to detail are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the right products are selected and sourced efficiently, directly impacting sales, customer satisfaction, and brand reputation.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in menswear design and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in menswear design often face the challenge of balancing classic styles with current trends while meeting the specific needs of their target demographic. Adapting to rapidly changing consumer preferences and ensuring fit and comfort across various body types is also critical. Successful menswear designers collaborate closely with pattern makers, merchandisers, and marketing teams to create collections that are both innovative and commercially viable. Regularly researching market trends and maintaining open communication with production and retail partners can help address these challenges and ensure product success.

The industry is constantly evolving, influenced by culture, lifestyle, and fashion designers.

Job description

Job Title: Sales Associate: Custom Clothier
Location: LABEL: Beverly Hills, Los Angeles
Reports to: Sales Manager

LABEL is looking for hunters. Build your own book of business selling custom menswear to executives and entrepreneurs, with a clear path from Associate to Director and earnings that grow as fast as you do. Top reps earn $100K+. Youโ€™ll represent an established 14-year company featured in Forbes, Harperโ€™s Bazaar, Inc., Entrepreneur, Fast Company, and People. This is a consultative sales career, not a retail job.

Why youโ€™ll want this role:

  • Real earning power. 16-22% uncapped commission. Year one typically ranges $45-60K, year two $60-85K, and tenured reps earn $100K+.
  • Two tracks, promoted on performance, not tenure: a producer track (Associate โ†’ Sales Executive โ†’ Senior Sales Executive) and a leadership track (Associate โ†’ Sales Manager โ†’ Sales Director โ†’ Senior Sales Director).
  • A book you own. The clients and relationships you build are yours to grow.
  • Real backing. Paid training and certification, the credibility of an established national brand, and a sister tailoring company, Alts, that delivers every order flawlessly.

What youโ€™ll do:

  • Hunt and build your pipeline. Proactively source your own clients through outreach, referrals, and your network. This is a hunter role: you create the pipeline, with full training and brand support behind you.
  • Run consultative appointments. Meet professionals in our SoHo showroom, at their office, or whereverโ€™s convenient, and guide them through a custom wardrobe experience.
  • Grow long-term clients. Turn first orders into repeat business through genuine follow-up and sharp CRM discipline.
  • Deliver flawlessly. Submit accurate orders and lean on our sister company, Alts, whose master tailors average 20+ years of experience, so every garment fits perfectly.

Who you are:

  • A hunter. Youโ€™re driven to find your own clients, chase the deal, and close. Youโ€™d rather build your own book than wait for leads, and beating a number gets you going.
  • Accountable, you own your results and operate like the business is yours, because your book is.
  • Polished and detail-oriented, in how you present and how you work.
  • A natural with people, you build trust quickly and keep it.
  • Coachable, you want to grow and you act on feedback.

What weโ€™re looking for:

  • Recent graduates with internship experience are encouraged to apply.ย
    • 1-2 years in sales, client-facing, or relationship-driven work is a plus but not required.
  • A track record of hitting goals, in sales, school, athletics, or anything youโ€™ve committed to.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent experience.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Paid training period at $3,500/month while you learn the craft and earn your certification.
  • After certification: 16-22% uncapped progressive commission, with ramp support that steps down as your commissions grow to replace it.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), 50% employee discount, clothing allowance on certification, and a company MacBook.

Why LABEL:

An established 14-year custom clothing brand with the energy of a company still scaling fast, featured in Forbes, Harperโ€™s Bazaar, Inc., Entrepreneur, Fast Company, and People. We invest heavily in training, promote from within, and give you the brand and infrastructure to build a real career. If you want to grow as fast as the brand, this is the place.
