Overview

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in formulating, teaching, and coaching technical aspects of game preparation and strategy for a Division I intercollegiate athletic program. Responsibilities include directing competitions, practices, administrative activities, alumni relations, and the recruitment process for student-athletes. The Assistant Coach develops the varsity sports program within the parameters and regulations of the Ivy League, other athletic leagues, the NCAA, and the University. This role requires maintaining a working knowledge of effective coaching techniques, organizing and managing all facets of the program, and ensuring the success and academic progress of student-athletes.

Required Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of effective coaching techniques and best practices in the jumps or throws events. Ability to work in a diverse work environment and ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with school administrators, parents, students and alums.
  • Ability to organize and manage all facets of the program including recruiting, scouting, individual instruction, monitoring academic progress and success of student-athletes, and general day to day operations.
  • Ability to lead and work independently as well as within a team environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, coaches and athletic and university administration. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, with travel as required.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • Professional certification in areas such as water safety, advanced life-saving, health services, first aid, or CPR may be required for some positions.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs on a regular basis.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Participates in the planning, organizing and execution of preseason and season practices and contests.
  • Evaluates the athletesโ€™ performance and progress to ensure peak performance during practices and contests.
  • Oversees the mental and physical preparation of athletes for contests; assists in the development of conditioning programs.
  • Scout sand evaluates opponentsโ€™ performance and recommends game strategy based on that evaluation.
  • Oversees the recruitment of prospective student athletes; evaluate prospective students' athletic and academic abilities and present Head Coach with recruits for final selection.
  • Participates in planning for alumni events including fund raising or other special functions.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and one year of work or playing experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledge of NCAA regulations.
