About the Memory Care Activities Coordinator

The Memory Care Engagement Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and leading meaningful engagement programs for residents living with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other cognitive impairments. This role promotes residents’ emotional, physical, cognitive, and social well-being through person-centered activities and supportive interactions designed to enhance quality of life and maintain dignity. This position works primarily within a memory care setting in a continuing care retirement community, assisted living community, or skilled nursing environment. The role requires flexibility, creativity, and the ability to respond calmly to changing resident needs and behaviors.

The coordinator will work closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure residents needs are being met.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and implement daily engagement programs and special events for memory care residents
  • Develop activities that support cognitive stimulation, sensory engagement, physical movement, social interaction, and emotional wellness
  • Lead both group and individualized programs based on resident abilities and interests
  • Maintain a monthly activity calendar that reflects resident-centered programming
  • Encourage resident participation while respecting personal choice and comfort levels
  • Utilize reminiscence therapy, music, art, sensory experiences, life skills activities, and therapeutic recreation techniques
  • Collaborate with nursing and interdisciplinary teams to support resident care plans and behavioral interventions
  • Communicate with families regarding resident participation and engagement opportunities
  • Prepare activity areas and ensure supplies and materials are organized and available
  • Document participation, attendance, and resident responses as required by community policies
  • Maintain a calm, positive, and supportive environment for residents and team members
  • Follow all safety, infection control, and regulatory guidelines

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in recreation therapy, gerontology, social work, or related field preferred
  • Experience working with older adults, dementia care, or memory support programming required
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead groups and adapt activities to varying cognitive and physical abilities
  • Compassionate, patient, and creative approach to resident engagement
  • Basic computer and documentation skills

Licensure

Valid Virginia Drivers License; CPR and First Aid certified
