What does Medium Voltage Transformer Specialist experience look like?

The ideal candidate has extensive experience as a substation technician, with a track record of:

  • Operating and maintaining medium and high voltage systems
  • Commissioning, Testing, and Safe Energization of new Medium Voltage/ High Voltage Electrical Systems
  • Conducting DOBLE DGA sampling and HIPOT testing
  • Executing maintenance and tests on high voltage systems
  • Manage upgrades, and optimizes medium-voltage electrical power distribution systems (typically ranging from 1 kV to 35 kV) during facility modernizations, digital expansions, or energy transition projects.
What will your day-to-day look like?

In addition to what’s listed above, you will be tasked with supporting their commissioning and construction team during electrical and functional testing, start-ups, and troubleshooting of various equipment. These may include switchgear, motor contactors, disconnect switches, circuit breakers, panel boards, transformers, surge protection devices, battery banks, UPS systems, power cables, protective relays, and meters.

  • System Upgrades & Integration: Lead the replacement, retrofitting, and commissioning of aging MV transformers, switchgears, and protection relays in refineries, LNG plants, or offshore platforms.
  • Technical Analysis & Design: Review electrical single-line diagrams, load-flow calculations, short-circuit studies, and arc-flash analyses.
  • Execution & Project Delivery: Coordinate on-site installation teams, contractors, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to minimize costly plant downtime during cutovers.
  • Asset Health Monitoring: Implement condition-based monitoring tools (e.g., partial discharge testing, thermal imaging, and dissolved gas analysis for oil-filled transformers).
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all MV assets comply with industry standards (such as IEEE, IEC, and API) and strict Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols.
Prerequisites for this role:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 5 to 10 years of hands-on experience with industrial electrical power systems, specifically focusing on medium-voltage equipment maintenance, testing, or capital projects.
  • Deep familiarity with oil and gas operational environments, hazardous area classifications (Classified/Ex zones), and power generation/distribution tie-ins.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • 10+ years of commissioning / medium voltage experience
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
  • Successfully pass a drug and alcohol test
  • First Aid/CPR, OSHA 10, GHS, Defensive Driving, H2S Awareness
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Availability to travel across the US as required
