People may use this term to express dissatisfaction with a job that feels unfulfilling or does not utilize their full potential. Job description

Brand Design EngineerAbout Bland AI

We’re a Series C startup that has raised over $100M from Emergence Capital, Scale Venture Partners, Y Combinator, and the founders of PayPal and Twilio.

Our mission is to build the world's most human AI phone agents. Thousands of businesses rely on Bland AI to automate customer conversations while delivering an experience customers actually enjoy.

We're growing quickly, and marketing plays a critical role in how the world experiences Bland. Every website interaction, campaign, product launch, piece of content, and brand expression is an opportunity to make Bland feel differentiated, credible, and world-class.

We're looking for a Brand Design Engineer to help define what that looks like.

Why This Role Exists

Bland is building one of the most ambitious companies in AI, and our brand needs to match the ambition of the product.

We're looking for someone with exceptional design taste who can own the visual quality of our marketing—from brand systems and creative direction to the website itself.

This is a hybrid design + technical role.

You should have a strong foundation in design and an obsessive eye for typography, composition, motion, interaction, and visual systems. But you should also be comfortable working directly in code.

Our website is custom-built, and we want the person who owns it to be able to actually make changes—not just write tickets for an engineer.

You'll use modern AI coding tools like Claude Code to build, iterate, and ship design directly to the website.

You'll work closely with Brand, Content, Product Marketing, Growth, and Engineering to make Bland's entire marketing presence feel cohesive, polished, and unmistakably ours.

What You'll DoOwn Bland's Marketing Design

Own the visual design direction across the marketing organization.

Develop and maintain the systems, guidelines, templates, and visual language that make Bland consistently look exceptional across web, campaigns, events, content, social, and product launches.

Raise the creative bar across everything marketing produces.

Own the Website

Take end-to-end ownership of Bland's marketing website.

Keep it current with new products, launches, case studies, campaigns, and messaging.

Continuously improve its design, UX, performance, responsiveness, accessibility, and overall quality.

Identify things that feel broken, outdated, inconsistent, or mediocre—and fix them.

Design in Code

Work directly in our custom codebase to implement your designs.

Use tools like Claude Code and other AI development tools to rapidly prototype, iterate, and ship new experiences.

You don't need to be a traditional software engineer, but you should be comfortable understanding a codebase, making frontend changes, debugging issues, and turning a design into a polished production experience.

Build the Brand System

Develop and evolve Bland's visual identity across typography, color, layout, illustration, motion, photography, iconography, and interaction.

Create systems that allow the rest of the marketing team to move quickly without sacrificing quality.

Know when to create a reusable system and when to break the rules for something exceptional.

Partner With Product Marketing

Work closely with Product Marketing to bring new products, features, launches, and narratives to life.

Turn positioning and messaging into compelling visual experiences across the website and broader marketing ecosystem.

Create High-Impact Marketing Experiences

Design landing pages, campaign experiences, launch pages, interactive experiences, event materials, social creative, and other high-visibility marketing assets.

Think beyond static design. Look for ways to use interaction, motion, and technology to make Bland's marketing memorable.

Maintain Quality

Own the quality bar for marketing design.

Establish QA processes for the website and other digital experiences.

Regularly audit the site for visual inconsistencies, broken experiences, outdated content, responsive issues, and opportunities to improve.

Don't wait for someone to tell you something needs fixing.

Must-Have QualitiesExceptional Design Taste

You have an unusually high bar for design.

You understand why something feels premium, modern, intentional, or generic.

You have strong instincts around typography, composition, hierarchy, spacing, interaction, and visual storytelling.

Design Fundamentals

You have a strong foundation in traditional design principles and can explain the reasoning behind your decisions.

You understand systems—not just individual assets.

Technical Curiosity

You're comfortable working with code and technology.

You don't need to be a full-stack engineer, but you should be able to navigate a frontend codebase, make changes, troubleshoot issues, and learn new technical tools quickly.

Experience with HTML/CSS/JavaScript, React, or similar technologies is a strong plus.

AI-Native

You understand how modern AI coding and creative tools can dramatically accelerate the design process.

You're excited to use Claude Code and other AI agents to go from idea → prototype → production without waiting on someone else.

Ownership

You have extremely high agency.

If the website looks wrong, you fix it.

If the brand system is inconsistent, you improve it.

If there's a better way to present something, you build it.

You don't need a detailed spec to do great work.

Speed + Taste

You can move quickly without lowering the creative bar.

You know how to distinguish between work that needs another three hours of refinement and work that just needs to ship.

Collaborative

You can work closely with marketers, product marketers, engineers, copywriters, and creative teammates.

You're opinionated about design but collaborative about getting to the best answer.

Nice to Haves
  • Degree or formal training in design, graphic design, interaction design, or a related field

  • Experience designing for high-growth technology companies

  • Strong portfolio of brand and digital design work

  • Frontend development experience

  • Experience with React, Next.js, HTML/CSS, or similar technologies

  • Experience using Claude Code, Cursor, or other AI coding agents

  • Experience building or maintaining design systems

  • Experience with motion design or interactive web experiences

  • Experience working closely with engineers

  • Experience with Figma and modern creative tooling

  • Experience designing for B2B SaaS or enterprise technology

You'll Thrive Here If...

You notice bad kerning from across the room.

You care deeply about how things look and feel.

You'd rather build the thing yourself than write a 20-page spec explaining what someone else should build.

You get excited about a beautifully designed website.

You think the best designers should understand technology.

You love experimenting with new AI tools and figuring out what they make possible.

You have strong opinions, high standards, and low ego.

You enjoy working in ambiguity and turning rough ideas into polished experiences.

You want to help define the visual identity of one of the companies shaping the future of AI.

Ambition Matters Most

We care more about what you've made than where you've worked.

Show us the brands, websites, systems, and experiences you've built.

If you have exceptional design taste, a strong technical curiosity, and the ambition to raise the creative bar at one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the world, we'd love to meet you.

Compensation & Perks
  • $120,000-170,000/yr

  • Meaningful equity + bonus

  • Comprehensive benefits

  • Beautiful office in Levi's Plaza, San Francisco

  • Work alongside one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the world
