Job description

Hampton Proton is the nation's 8th proton therapy facility and one of the largest free-standing proton clinics in the world. The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating a variety of cancers since August 2010.
Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) began with a vision. After the instillation of the first proton cancer treatment institute in 1990, rumblings of the therapy's success reached Hampton University president, Dr. William R. Harvey. Upon learning more about the treatment from a Hampton University alumnus, he assembled a team to assess the feasibility of what would become the largest free-standing proton therapy facility in the world.

How well we accomplish our goals of conquering cancer and saving lives largely depends on your daily contributions, as Hampton Proton's true character is reflected through the manner in which all of our patients are treated. To be considered for Hampton Proton's Internship Program, the following information will be required:
• Completed Hampton Proton Internship Application and Questionnaire.
• Proof of being currently enrolled in a program of study or a recent graduate (within 12 months) from an accredited college/university or technical/vocational institution.
• Proof of good academic standing (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
• Proof of academic class schedule.
• Recent resume and/or cover letter.
• Applicable course syllabus if academic credit will be applied from your educational institution.
Physician Assistant Intern

  • You will be allowed (if the patient agrees) to observe the physician consultation of the new patients of various types of cancer diagnosis.
  • When patient permits, observe the physician consultation of the new patients of various types of cancer diagnosis.
  • Assist with referral appointments for consultations and support services within established service standards, including social workers, dietitians, physician, etc.
  • Participate in a multi-disciplinary patient care team that involves clinical and nonclinical staff (e.g., physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, educators, schedulers, lab/x-ray, referrals)
  • Interact with patients and work to achieve organizational objectives, including those of maintaining continuity of care, providing higher quality health care services, improving patient safety, and improving patient satisfaction.
  • Greet patients, answers telephones, schedules appointments to include arrival appointments in MOSAIQ, checks out patients, and referral scheduling; arranges for hospital admissions, referrals, and laboratory services, updates, and files patient medical records, fills out forms, handles patient related correspondence requests, and orders clinical clerical supplies and forms.
  • Obtain medical histories and records vital signs, explain treatment procedures to patients, and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Initiates, builds, and maintains relationships with patients in the clinic, offering support and guidance as they go through Proton Radiation Therapy Treatments.
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the Proton Radiation team, and with external care providers to improve quality of life for all cancer patients and their families.

At the completion of an Internship Program, each Student Intern will be required to create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that will be performed in a session with other Student Interns where the mentors/supervisors will attend. Topics of discussion should be focused on the following:
• What college/university you attend and your major.
• What plans do you have after graduating.
• What was learned during the internship.
• What tasks or projects were completed in your department.
• What skills and abilities were developed.
• What professional strengths and weaknesses were discovered during the internship.
• What part of the internship was enjoyed the most.
• What may need to be improved or included for future interns.
At the conclusion of the Internship Program, each Student Intern will receive an evaluation form completed by their mentor/supervisor. A copy is provided to the Student Intern, Educational Institution, and the Human Resources Department.
