Job description

The Product Design Engineer is a key member of the Engineering team - designing new products and making improvements to existing products. May also evaluate products, parts or processes for cost efficiency and reliability and ensure project completion. Will also determine and document the design, methods, of production and methods of testing for all products developed by or for Mercury Medical. This team member will also assist the Assembly department by specifying production methods, designing and building production fixtures and procuring tools and devices to aid in the production process as well assist the Quality Assurance department with determining and documenting test methods, designing and building test fixtures.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Generate, update and maintain all parts drawings, parts lists, assembly drawings and assembly procedures.
  • Determine, design and build production and testing fixtures.
  • Determine and order tools and equipment for production and inspection.
  • Generate and update quality assurance test methods and inspection procedures.
  • Establish production processes for optimizing quality and minimizing costs.
  • Perform product and value engineering on designated products.
  • Achieve the required prototype building scheduling.
  • Develop technical expertise about the product and its components emphasizing critical areas of mechanical alignment and interfacing.
  • Establish the recommended manufacturing procedures as indicated in the manufacturing engineering section.
  • When building prototype units, keep accurate logs of all problems encountered such as failing to fit, hole alignment, etc. All items which need to be corrected by a print change will be reviewed by the Director of Engineering.
  • Work closely with manufacturing during production startup to ensure all necessary information is transferred.
  • Ascertain where special jigs or tools may be required.
  • Prepare manufacturing operation sheets for each assembly specifying the sequence of operations for the assembly and the time standard.
  • Evaluate manufacturing methods and processes for improvement and cost reduction.
  • EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and five years experience in medical device strongly preferred.
