What is medical manufacturing?

Medical manufacturing refers to the process of designing, producing, and distributing medical devices, equipment, and supplies used in healthcare settings. This industry covers a wide range of products, from simple items like syringes to complex devices such as MRI machines and surgical robots. Medical manufacturers must adhere to strict quality standards and government regulations to ensure the safety and effectiveness of their products. The field plays a crucial role in supporting patient care and advancing medical technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in medical manufacturing?

To thrive in Medical Manufacturing, you need a background in manufacturing processes, quality control, and knowledge of medical device regulations, often supported by a relevant degree or technical training. Familiarity with standards such as ISO 13485, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and operation of specialized production equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong teamwork skills help ensure compliance and efficient production. These competencies are crucial to consistently produce safe, effective products and maintain regulatory compliance in a highly regulated industry.

What are some common challenges faced in medical manufacturing roles, and how can new employees prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in medical manufacturing is maintaining strict compliance with regulatory standards, such as FDA or ISO requirements, which necessitates meticulous attention to detail and thorough documentation. Employees must also adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and processes to ensure high-quality, safe products. Newcomers can prepare by familiarizing themselves with industry regulations, developing strong organizational skills, and being open to ongoing training. Collaboration with quality assurance, engineering, and production teams is also key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth operations.

What is the difference between Medical Manufacturing vs Medical Assembly?

The Manufacturing Engineer also provides technical guidance to maintenance technicians and supports equipment commissioning, upgrades, and optimization activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering support for manufacturing equipment and production processes, including data analysis, test station support, and process troubleshooting.
  • Support maintenance technicians with engineering-level guidance during equipment- and process-related issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify root causes, implement long-term corrective actions, and improve equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Manage and maintain production documentation, including drawings, prints, process sheets, work instructions, and revision-controlled files; ensure accurate versions are distributed to production and maintenance teams.
  • Support preventive maintenance (PM) development by identifying critical inspection points, process checks, and mechanical/equipment tolerances.
  • Assist with equipment commissioning, station verification, and process validation during new line startups, upgrades, and process or recipe changes.
  • Analyze process and equipment failures, including fixture issues, misalignment, sensor interaction, end-of-line (EOL) test failures, cycle inconsistencies, and equipment-induced defects.
  • Coordinate with Controls and Automation Engineers to correlate process failures with PLC logic, sensors, drives, and machine behavior.
  • Support creation, cleanup, and maintenance of BOM data, equipment records, and technical metadata within the EAM system.
  • Lead or participate in structured root cause investigations using tools such as 5-Why, Ishikawa, BDA, and failure mode analysis.
  • Recommend and implement incremental improvements such as fixture modifications, tooling enhancements, alignment corrections, guard adjustments, and procedural updates.
  • Maintain strong documentation control and hygiene to ensure all engineering files and process documents are current, accurate, and accessible.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on throughput, defect reduction, cycle-time improvement, and station repeatability.
  • Participate in safety reviews, process hazard assessments, and LOTO validation activities as required.
  • Perform additional duties

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Systems Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Experience working with Siemens-integrated equipment, 6-axis robots, and vision control systems to maintain and improve performance.
  • Experience in the battery industry or similar environments such as power generation, high-volume/low-mix automotive, or medical manufacturing.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and creating mechanical and electrical schematics

Desired Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Six Sigma certification.
  • Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Experience in lithium battery manufacturing or electrical component manufacturing.
