Ohana Care Clinic is a Rural Health Clinic (RHC) based in Hilo, Hawai‘i. We provide accessible, high-quality primary care and psychiatry services with a strong focus on patient experience, teamwork, and quality. Our goal is to deliver dependable, compassionate care for the community—every visit, every day.

About the Role

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a key member of the care team, supporting providers and ensuring efficient daily clinic operations. This role combines direct patient care (rooming patients, vitals, documentation support, specimen collection) with clinical workflow and basic administrative responsibilities. The MA helps maintain a safe, organized clinical environment and contributes to excellent patient throughput and service quality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent relevant clinical experience
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or ability to obtain within a defined onboarding period)
  • Experience in a clinical setting with patient-facing responsibilities
  • Strong working knowledge of infection control, room turnover, and basic clinical workflows

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
  • Phlebotomy experience and/or certification
  • Experience in primary care, family medicine, urgent care, or community health settings
  • Experience working with Nurse Practitioners and/or Physicians
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Strong customer service skills, reliability, and ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinic

Responsibilities

  • Room patients: collect vital signs, verify medications, update histories, and document accurately in the EHR
  • Support providers during exams and minor procedures within scope of practice
  • Perform specimen collection (as applicable): blood draws/phlebotomy, swabs, and other routine collections
  • Label, process, and prepare specimens for transport per clinic and lab protocols
  • Maintain exam rooms and clinical areas: cleaning, stocking supplies, sterilization/infection-control procedures
  • Support patient flow and clinic operations, including basic front desk coverage as needed (phones, scheduling support, check-in/out assistance)
  • Coordinate with the care team to ensure patients receive timely and accurate care
  • Follow clinic policies, HIPAA requirements, and safety standards consistently
