Job description

The Medical Assistant / Correctional Health Tech provides basic clinical and administrative support services within a correctional healthcare environment. This role assists licensed nursing staff and providers in delivering safe, efficient, and compassionate care to inmates/residents while maintaining security procedures and facility policies..


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist nurses and medical providers with daily clinical operations
  • Obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, and medical histories
  • Prepare patients for examinations and treatments
  • Perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, EKGs, and basic lab procedures as permitted
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed and allowed by state regulations
  • Document patient information accurately in electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Schedule appointments, process medical requests, and maintain medical files
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies within the facility
  • Observe and report changes in inmate/resident conditions to licensed staff
  • Maintain infection control and safety standards
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, correctional policies, and healthcare regulations
  • Work collaboratively with custody staff while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Assist with intake screenings, chronic care clinics, and discharge processes
  • Maintain inventory and stock of medical supplies


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Completion of Medical Assistant program
  • Current Medical Assistant certification preferred (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent)
  • CPR/BLS certification required
  • Previous correctional healthcare, urgent care, or clinical experience preferred
  • Ability to work in a secure and fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills
