How much do medical health physicist jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for medical health physicist in the United States is $194,562.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $175,000.00 and $210,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a medical health physicist do?

A medical health physicist specializes in applying radiation safety principles to medical settings, ensuring the safe use of radiation in diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. They perform radiation dose assessments, develop safety protocols, and monitor equipment to protect patients and staff, often working with imaging devices like X-ray and MRI machines. Certification from organizations such as the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Medical Physics is typically required.

Are health physicists in demand?

Health physicists, including medical health physicists, are in demand due to the need for radiation safety in medical, research, and industrial settings. Employment opportunities are expected to grow as healthcare facilities and regulatory agencies prioritize radiation protection and safety standards, often requiring specialized certifications and knowledge of radiation detection tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Medical Health Physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Health Physicist, you need a strong background in physics, radiation safety, and medical imaging, typically supported by a master's or doctoral degree in medical physics and board certification (e.g., ABR or CCPM). Familiarity with radiation detection instruments, dosimetry software, and regulatory compliance systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with healthcare teams and ensuring patient and staff safety. These competencies are vital for maintaining safe use of radiation in medical settings while meeting regulatory and quality standards.

What is the difference between Medical Health Physicist vs Radiation Therapist?

AspectMedical Health PhysicistRadiation Therapist
CredentialsMaster's or Doctorate in Medical Physics, certification (e.g., ABMP, ABR)Associate or Bachelor's degree in Radiation Therapy, state licensure
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, research facilities, focusing on safety and equipment calibrationHospitals, cancer treatment centers, delivering radiation therapy to patients
Employer & Industry UsageHealthcare institutions, regulatory agencies, research organizationsOncology departments, cancer treatment centers

Medical Health Physicists primarily focus on radiation safety, equipment calibration, and treatment planning, ensuring safe and effective use of radiation. Radiation Therapists, on the other hand, directly administer radiation treatments to patients. While both roles work within healthcare settings involving radiation, their responsibilities and qualifications differ significantly.

What are some common challenges Medical Health Physicists face when ensuring radiation safety in healthcare settings?

Medical Health Physicists often navigate challenges such as balancing the need for accurate diagnostic imaging or effective radiation therapy with the imperative to minimize unnecessary exposure for patients and staff. They must stay up-to-date with evolving regulations and rapidly advancing equipment technologies. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including physicians, technologists, and administrators—is essential for implementing safety protocols and resolving issues promptly. Clear communication and continuous education are key to fostering a strong culture of radiation safety throughout the facility.

Will AI replace medical physicists?

Medical physicists play a critical role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medical imaging and radiation therapy, tasks that require specialized knowledge and clinical judgment. While AI can assist with data analysis and automate routine tasks, it is unlikely to fully replace medical physicists, as their expertise is essential for complex decision-making, quality assurance, and maintaining safety standards in healthcare environments.

Do medical physicists get paid well?

Medical physicists typically earn competitive salaries due to their specialized training in radiation safety, imaging, and treatment planning. Salaries vary by experience, location, and work setting, but they generally have higher-than-average wages compared to many healthcare roles.

What are Medical Health Physicists?

Medical Health Physicists are professionals who apply principles of physics to medicine, particularly in the safe use of radiation for diagnosis and treatment. They ensure that medical imaging and radiation therapy equipment operate safely and effectively, protecting both patients and healthcare workers from unnecessary exposure. Their responsibilities include monitoring radiation levels, developing safety protocols, and ensuring compliance with regulations. They often work closely with radiologists, oncologists, and other medical staff to optimize patient care while maintaining safety standards.
