They range from simple items like bandages and thermometers to complex technologies such as pacemakers, MRI machines, and surgical robots. Medical devices play a crucial role in healthcare by improving patient outcomes, supporting medical professionals, and enhancing the quality of life. They are regulated to ensure safety and effectiveness before being approved for use.

What are different types of medical device jobs?

The healthcare industry relies on medical devices to treat and diagnose patients, so many jobs exist around medical devices as a result. A medical device engineer helps design medical devices to particular specifications during the research and design phase. A production specialist manufactures medical devices, while a QA inspector ensures that production adheres to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations. A quality control technician ensures medical device function as intended. Finally, medical sales agents are responsible for medical device sales to healthcare providers and medical facilities.

To thrive as a Medical Device Sales Representative, you need a strong background in sales, knowledge of medical terminology, and typically a bachelor's degree in life sciences or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, product demonstration tools, and relevant certifications such as Certified Sales Professional (CSP) are commonly required. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills help you connect with healthcare professionals and address their needs effectively. These skills are vital for successfully promoting products, meeting sales targets, and ensuring customer satisfaction in a highly regulated industry.

What are some typical challenges faced in a medical device sales role, and how can I prepare for them?

Medical Device sales professionals often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, staying updated on evolving product technologies, and building relationships with healthcare providers who have demanding schedules. Success in this field relies on strong communication skills, persistence, and a continuous learning mindset. Avita Medical, Inc

Honolulu, HI • On-site

Contractor

Job description

AVITA Medical is a therapeutic acute wound care company focused on advancing skin restoration through innovative technologies that support improved healing, reduced patient burden, and more efficient treatment pathways across complex wounds.
  • RECELL® Spray-On Skin™ Cells - An FDA-approved autologous cell harvesting technology that uses a patient's own skin cells for the treatment of thermal burns and full-thickness skin defects.
  • Cohealyx™ Collagen Dermal Matrix - A collagen-based dermal matrix designed to support tissue integration, revascularization, and readiness for definitive closure in full-thickness wounds.
  • PermeaDerm® Biosynthetic Wound Matrix - A transparent, conformable wound matrix used for partial- and full-thickness wounds, burns, donor sites, and surgical wounds.

Together, the portfolio gives surgeons and care teams complementary solutions across the acute wound healing continuum-from temporary coverage and wound bed preparation to definitive closure.
AVITA Medical is looking for an established independent medical device representative in Hawaii who already has strong access across hospital-based surgical specialties and understands how to drive adoption in the operating room, burn, trauma, plastics, and advanced wound care settings.
This is a portfolio expansion opportunity for a proven 1099 representative who is already calling on Hawaii's acute care hospitals, surgeons, OR teams, burn programs, trauma services, wound care teams, and value analysis stakeholders-and who wants to add a differentiated regenerative medicine and acute wound care portfolio to an existing book of business.
The Opportunity
Hawaii is a relationship-driven hospital market. We are seeking a representative who knows the territory, understands complex hospital sales cycles, and can credibly engage surgeons, OR leadership, burn and trauma stakeholders, wound care teams, supply chain, and value analysis committees.
The right partner will be comfortable building clinical confidence, supporting procedures, advancing VAC and formulary discussions, and creating pull-through once products are approved and adopted.
Requirements
  • Represent AVITA Medical's acute wound care portfolio across Hawaii, with a focus on RECELL®, Cohealyx™, and PermeaDerm®.
  • Leverage existing hospital and surgeon relationships to accelerate access, evaluation, and adoption.
  • Call on burn surgeons, plastic surgeons, trauma surgeons, wound care specialists, OR leadership, service line leaders, supply chain, and hospital administration.
  • Provide in-person operating room case coverage and procedural support, including product preparation, handling, and workflow education.
  • Lead in-services, product demonstrations, training sessions, and follow-up education for physicians, nurses, and clinical teams.
  • Support account development, VAC submissions, formulary access, product evaluations, and conversion to routine use.
  • Identify high-value opportunities across burn centers, trauma programs, plastics, surgical departments, and wound care services.
  • Collaborate with AVITA Medical commercial, clinical, market access, and reimbursement teams to drive sustainable growth.
  • Who We're Looking For
  • Established independent medical device, biologics, regenerative medicine, surgical, wound care, burn, trauma, plastics, or OR-based sales representative.
  • Strong existing relationships within Hawaii hospitals and health systems; Honolulu market access preferred.
  • Five or more years of successful hospital-based medical device or biologics sales experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to sell clinically complex products into the operating room and acute care environment.
  • Confidence supporting surgical cases and educating surgeons, OR staff, nursing teams, and hospital stakeholders.
  • Experience navigating VAC, formulary, supply chain, contracting, reimbursement, and hospital approval pathways.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-directed, and commercially disciplined, with the ability to create demand and close business without daily oversight.
  • Existing complementary portfolio and bandwidth to actively represent AVITA Medical products in a compliant and professional manner.

Why Partner with AVITA Medical?
  • Add a differentiated acute wound care and regenerative medicine portfolio to your existing business.
  • Represent products that fit naturally into burn, trauma, plastics, surgical, and advanced wound care conversations.
  • Work with technologies designed to help clinicians improve healing, reduce patient burden, and support efficient care delivery.
  • Benefit from dedicated corporate commercial, clinical, market access, and reimbursement support.
  • Build recurring revenue opportunities within high-value hospital accounts.
  • Maintain the flexibility of an independent contractor relationship while partnering with a company focused on growth and clinical impact.

Ideal Fit
This opportunity is best suited for a high-performing independent representative who already knows the Hawaii hospital landscape, has trusted clinical relationships, understands the pace and complexity of OR-based selling, and is ready to help expand adoption of an innovative acute wound care portfolio.
If you are an experienced independent medical device professional looking to add a differentiated regenerative medicine and advanced wound care portfolio to your existing business, we would welcome the opportunity to connect.
Apply today to learn more about becoming AVITA Medical's Independent Contract Sales Representative for Hawaii.
AVITA Medical is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and welcomes qualified applicants from all backgrounds.
