Role: Senior Controls Engineer
Location: Libertyville, IL

Role Summary

The Controls Engineer will lead and support the design, installation, commissioning, and optimization of automated manufacturing equipment in a medical device plant. This role focuses on PLC/SCADA systems, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of high-volume production systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop specifications and user requirements for controls, SCADA, and communication systems
  • Oversee OEM machine controls design to ensure safety and performance compliance
  • Support installation, FAT/SAT, validation, and commissioning of equipment
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment downtime and quality issues
  • Implement improvements to enhance safety, yield, and productivity
  • Manage PLC programs, firmware, and system security
  • Optimize HMI, SCADA, MES, and vision inspection systems
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions
  • Define preventive maintenance strategies
  • Train maintenance and production teams on controls systems
  • Support validation activities and develop test scripts

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 7+ years in manufacturing/industrial automation
  • Strong experience with Allen Bradley PLCs (ControlLogix) and HMI systems
  • Proficiency in tools: RSLogix5000, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk SE, Ignition, Cognex
  • Experience with drives (PowerFlex, Kinetix) and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ProfiNet)
  • Knowledge of PID control, serial communication, RFID systems, and automation hardware
  • Strong troubleshooting and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical device industry experience
  • Experience with vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Fanuc)
  • Exposure to Beckhoff or B&R (ABB) PLCs
