What is medical design?

Medical design refers to the process of creating and developing medical devices, equipment, and solutions that improve patient care and healthcare outcomes. Professionals in this field use engineering, biology, and design principles to ensure that medical products are safe, effective, and user-friendly. Medical design can involve anything from surgical tools to diagnostic machines and wearable health technologies. The process typically includes research, concept development, prototyping, testing, and regulatory approval. Collaboration with healthcare professionals and understanding patient needs are essential aspects of medical design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in medical design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Medical Design, you need a strong background in biomedical engineering or industrial design, combined with knowledge of anatomy, materials science, and regulatory standards. Familiarity with CAD software, rapid prototyping tools, and medical device regulations such as FDA or ISO standards is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help professionals innovate while ensuring patient safety and usability. These skills are crucial for developing safe, effective, and user-friendly medical products that meet both clinical needs and compliance requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in medical design, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in medical design often encounter challenges such as balancing regulatory compliance with innovative design, ensuring user safety, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Navigating stringent FDA or CE requirements while maintaining creativity can be demanding, but staying updated on regulations and involving regulatory experts early in the process helps. Close collaboration with clinicians, engineers, and end-users is crucial to create practical and user-friendly solutions. Frequent prototyping and user testing also help address usability issues before product launch.

What is the difference between Medical Design vs Medical Device Engineering?

AspectMedical DesignMedical Device Engineering
Required CredentialsDesign certifications, CAD skills, knowledge of medical regulationsEngineering degrees, technical certifications, regulatory knowledge
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, R&D labs, collaborative teamsEngineering labs, manufacturing facilities, technical teams
Employer & Industry UsageMedical device companies, healthcare product firmsMedical device manufacturers, biotech firms
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for roles in product development and innovationFocuses more on technical engineering aspects

Medical Design primarily involves creating the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of medical products, focusing on user experience and compliance. Medical Device Engineering emphasizes the technical development, testing, and manufacturing of medical devices. Both roles are essential in bringing medical products to market but differ in their focus and skill sets.

How to get into medical design?

To enter medical design, candidates typically need a background in biomedical engineering, industrial design, or related fields, along with knowledge of medical device regulations and standards. Gaining experience through internships, certifications such as ISO 13485, and proficiency with CAD software can improve job prospects. Strong understanding of human factors and collaboration with healthcare professionals are also valuable in this field.

What does a medical designer do?

A medical designer develops and improves medical devices, equipment, and healthcare products by applying principles of engineering, design, and human factors. They often use CAD software and collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure safety, functionality, and compliance with industry standards. Their work supports the creation of innovative solutions for patient care and medical procedures.

Job Description
At Teledyne FLIR in Orem, UT we design and manufacture high quality drones to carry the best sensors into the toughest environments. Our extensive history includes working alongside organizations including U.S. Army, Marines, and US DOD Special Operations Community. We embrace cutting edge innovative technologies and design concepts to bring new capability to our warfighters. As an original equipment manufacturer of Drones (UAS), we are at the forefront of new American engineering and manufacturing technologies. The foundation of our company is the drive to build superior UAS through engineering excellence. You can expect diverse challenges that will require you to be agile and innovative in your work. You can also expect to be on a small team that strives to meet these challenges together. UAS development and the UAS market is still young and constantly changing. Your work will be varied and innovative by nature.
Job Summary:
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will lead the mechanical design of lightweight, high-performance systems and subsystems, with a strong emphasis on advanced CAD design and assembly management. This role owns complex, high-part-count assemblies from concept through production, ensuring robust interface definition, configuration control, and clear documentation through drawings and BOMs. The engineer applies parametric, top-down CAD modeling, FEA, prototyping, and testing to deliver aerodynamically efficient, durable designs optimized for manufacturing and assembly. Working closely with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and production, this role drives design excellence, innovation, and seamless transition from development to sustained production with minimal oversight.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Utilize your experience with lightweight structural design and materials to own system and subsystem designs. You will own interfaces and integrate other team member's subsystems into your assemblies.
  • Control large part count assemblies in CAD and PLM, and ensure strong transition to documented control in BOMs and assembly drawings.
  • Optimize for aerodynamic profiles and efficiencies.
  • Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA), experiments, and rapid prototyping to design products for durability, performance, and manufacturing quality.
  • Develop and conduct tests to validate design across full operational capability envelope and environment.
  • Deliver market leading designs with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) / Design for Assembly (DFA) methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills; active collaboration with team leaders, management, and other team members is expected. The Sr. Engineer takes broad, high-level requirements and feedback to generate specific design tasks and outcomes; owns and drives meetings as applicable.
  • Take strong ownership of assigned systems, programs, customers, etc. Actively curate subsystem requirements, performance, and timeline. Requires very little direction from management in moving projects forward against agreed upon timelines.
  • Coordinate with suppliers during development and production; incidental travel may be required.
  • Coordinate with production staff to provide training, Manufacturing Test Requirements (MTRs), work instruction review, and troubleshooting of design issues.
  • Create and control design data from concept to product sustainment; support engineering change processes within Teledyne FLIR and with government customers as required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in mechanical design of weight and size sensitive assemblies and components.
  • Strong system design ownership with demonstrated experience managing complex assemblies and ensuring system specifications are being met.
  • Demonstrated strong record of technical innovation, research, and development of complex mechanical systems.
  • Strong CAD skills in both design and assembly management required. Robust parametric g and top-down modeling experience is a must.
  • Experience with PDM tools and understanding of configuration control practices.
  • Experience with battery, motor, and/or UAV propulsion systems preferred.
  • Expertise with Solidworks 3D modeling, drawing, and simulation software is strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading technical projects and teams preferred.
