Overview

The Medical Coding Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the coding department to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant coding practices. This position provides leadership, performance management, education coordination, productivity monitoring, and operational support for coding staff while maintaining compliance with regulatory, payer, and organizational requirements.


Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of coding staff to ensure coding accuracy, productivity, and compliance with applicable regulations and organizational standards
  • Monitor coding work queues to ensure timely processing and completion of coding assignments
  • Coordinate and replenish inpatient midlevel files for both the PBO and coding teams to support uninterrupted workflow
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute departmental reports, dashboards, and performance metrics
  • Monitor deficiency reports to identify trends, recurring documentation issues, and areas of concern that may negatively impact revenue cycle performance, coding compliance, claim submission timeliness, and reimbursement
  • Monitor coder productivity, quality, and performance against established departmental benchmarks
  • Maintain and manage the coding audit schedule, ensuring routine audits are completed and results are communicated to staff and leadership
  • Review audit findings, and identify trends, for education follow up
  • Monitor coding queues, to ensure timely filing requirements, compliance and revenue cycle integrity
  • Analyze revenue cycle reports to identify coding-related trends, variances, and areas of concern that may affect reimbursement, claim processing, and overall financial performance
  • Oversee employee timekeeping functions, including Kronos review, payroll verification, attendance monitoring, and PTO approval
  • Monitor and maintain coding staff credentials and certifications, ensuring compliance with continuing education and renewal requirements
  • Manage departmental education resources and maintain employee education and training logs
  • Coordinate staff training, continuing education opportunities, and professional development activities
  • Order and maintain department supplies and resources necessary for coding operations

Qualifications

BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred and/or equivalent in education and experience required.

Experience:

  1. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in healthcare operations, revenue cycle, health information management, quality, compliance, or a related analytical field.
  2. Experience analyzing operational, financial, or performance data and preparing reports, dashboards, and summaries for leadership review.
  3. Experience monitoring workflows, productivity metrics, or performance indicators in a healthcare or business environment.
  4. Experience working with large datasets and using reporting tools to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
  5. Experience developing or maintaining dashboards and performance tracking tools (e.g., Excel, reporting systems, or BI tools).
  6. Experience supporting process improvement initiatives, operational audits, or compliance monitoring.

Skills:

  1. Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and communicate findings clearly to leadership.
  2. Ability to manage multiple priorities and support operational decision making through data driven insights.
  3. Good oral and written communication skills.
  4. Good interpersonal skills.
  5. Speaks, reads, and writes English to the extent required by the position.
  6. Knowledge of a second language preferred.

Pay Range
USD $72,000.00 - USD $74,000.00 /Yr.
