Job description

Position Summary:
The Coder/Abstractor II is a senior-level coding professional responsible for performing advanced coding functions with accuracy, efficiency, and a comprehensive understanding of coding guidelines. This role supports the coding team by serving as a mentor and resource for Coder/Abstractor I staff when needed, helping guide less experienced coders through complex cases and documentation challenges. Individuals in this position consistently apply expert-level knowledge of coding rules, effectively use encoder tools and reference materials, and maintain high standards of compliance and ethical coding practices. The role also includes online abstraction of records and may involve working with various payment methodologies such as DRG and APC. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and adherence to regulatory and departmental standards are essential to success in this position.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Apply advanced ICD10, CPT, and HCPCS coding principles to accurately code complex medical records across multiple service types.
  • Perform detailed data abstraction to ensure complete and accurate information is entered into coding and billing systems.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to Coder I staff, providing guidance, clarification, and education when requested.
  • Utilize encoder tools, Coding Clinic guidance, and organizational coding policies to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and internal quality expectations.
  • Review and interpret documentation to support proper code assignment while preventing errors that may impact reimbursement or compliance.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, revenue cycle staff, or clinical departments to resolve coding discrepancies and enhance documentation quality.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • CIC, COC, CPC, CPCA, CCSP, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA required.

Educational Requirements:
  • High school diploma, GED, Associates Degree, AHIMA or AAPC certification required.

Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum of 6 months experience as a Coder I unless has one year of exact coding experience at previous facility.
  • CPCA must have 2 years of coding experience.

Special Skills or Training Requirements:
  • Minimum typing skills of 35 characters per minute.
  • Medical terminology and coding knowledge, required.
  • Organizational skills required.
  • Computer skills with billing knowledge preferred.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires extended periods of sitting and continuous use of a computer, keyboard, and mouse to review documentation, assign codes, and enter data. Work involves repetitive hand motions and sustained visual focus while analyzing detailed clinical information. Occasional movement, such as standing or stretching, may be needed throughout the day to maintain comfort and focus.
