Description:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general direction, makes inspections of grounds and properties for compliance/violations within City jurisdiction to ensure conformance with applicable codes.


ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Enforces municipal, property maintenance codes and ordinances.
  • Receives and responds to complaints of code violations related to signage, nuisances, housing conditions, weeds, dumping, and other code-related matters in various formats, such as in-person, by mail, telephone, etc.
  • Entering inspection reports into the city computer system.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of correspondence, written warnings, citations, records, and reports relating to code enforcement issues and actions.
  • Conducts field inspections of violations and takes appropriate action to correct the violations, including verbal warning, correction notices, or citation. Post vacant or unsafe buildings not approved for occupancy.
  • Appropriately logs complaints, assigns case numbers, and establishes case files.
  • Performs vacant structure inspections.
  • Represents the City in a professional manner and effectively deals with the public to gain their cooperation in resolving problems and concerns.
  • Provides information to persons who request information or assistance in code enforcement matters
  • Meets with owners, tenants, contractors, business owners, etc., to review violations and explain code requirements to achieve code compliance.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Computer proficiency and demonstrated knowledge of related software programs, office equipment, and other tools utilized during field inspections are required. Must possess ICC certification or have the ability to obtain certification, and pass the I.P.M.C. test within 12 months of hire.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Able to perform duties in various indoor/outdoor temperatures and climates. Perform moderate to heavy repetitive labor. Moderate to heavy bending, stooping, lifting, repetitive walking, or standing for long periods of time. Ability to operate the internal radio system. Must maintain the physical requirements to successfully pass the Essential Job Function Test as required for this position.

Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, methods, techniques, practices, and code enforcement, laws, codes, standards, and polices relating to code enforcement. Ability to consistently establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with public and internal staff under stressful conditions while projecting a professional image. Strive to achieve professional working relationships and show a willingness to help others meet critical deadlines and code compliance. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to prepare, organize, and communicate field data reports. Demonstrate excellent customer service.
