PRN Medical Assistant (As Needed)
Position Summary
The PRN Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support on an as-needed basis to ensure efficient patient care and office operations. This position verifies patient information by interviewing patients, recording medical histories, documenting the purpose of the visit, preparing patients for examination, assisting providers during procedures, and performing a variety of patient care tasks under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.
This is a PRN (as-needed) position. Work schedules are based on operational needs, provider schedules, employee coverage, and patient volume. Hours are not guaranteed and may vary from week to week.
Essential Functions
  • Maintain patient privacy and adhere to HIPAA guidelines at all times.
  • Utilize computer applications to perform data entry, update patient demographics, document medical histories, review of systems, and provider notes within the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Answer and manage office telephone calls and return messages as appropriate.
  • Schedule patient appointments and communicate appointment information when necessary.
  • Inform patients of laboratory results as directed and document all communications appropriately.
  • Update and file patient medical records and correspondence.
  • Complete insurance forms and assist with coding as directed.
  • Process prescription refill requests under provider direction.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for medications.
  • Report and record applicable malignant diagnoses to the FCDS portal.
  • Prepare certified letters for noncompliant patients requiring treatment for malignant diagnoses.
  • Notify management of clinical supply needs.
Clinical Duties
  • Welcome and greet patients in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and OSHA standards at all times.
  • Obtain medical histories, document chief complaints, and accurately record provider findings within the patient's medical record.
  • Monitor and document patient symptoms for provider review.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, surgeries, and cosmetic treatments.
  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms and assist providers during clinical, surgical, and cosmetic procedures.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a licensed provider.
  • Explain treatment plans and procedures to patients.
  • Ensure all required consents are completed prior to procedures.
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-procedure photographs when required.
  • Collect, label, and prepare laboratory specimens.
  • Provide patient education regarding medications and post-procedure care.
  • Remove sutures and perform dressing changes as directed.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical instruments according to established protocols.
  • Monitor office-use medications and patient sample expiration dates.
  • Restock examination rooms and maintain adequate clinical supplies.
  • Provide compassionate, professional patient care while serving as a patient advocate throughout the visit.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of Medical Assistant experience, preferably in Dermatology or a related specialty.
  • Dermatology experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to travel between practice locations.
  • Professional appearance appropriate for a medical office.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus but not required.

  • PRN (As Needed).
  • Hours are scheduled based on business needs and are not guaranteed.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours and assist with coverage for vacations, call-outs, provider schedule changes, and increased patient demand.
