Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Medical Assistant directly assists providers in the delivery of medical care to patients.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist in the preparation of the medical office for the day; maintains safe, clean and organized working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  2. Prepares treatment rooms for patient by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  3. Greets and escorts patient to treatment room, updates medical history, takes vitals and records information in preparation for exam.
  4. Assists provider with routine physicals, minor surgical procedures, and other services as needed; administers vaccines, draws blood, administers electrocardiographic tests, and performs urine dipstick and other laboratory tests as directed.
  5. Orders patient tests as needed; prepares and sends requested medical information as needed.
  6. Communicates with patients via telephone and other means to confirm appointments, provide information, etc.
  7. Provides patient ER callbacks with documentation with 72 hours.
  8. Assist provider with management of open claims and open encounters in preparation of the Business department end of month closing.
  9. Updates electronic medical records.
  10. Assist provider with documentation from patient screenings in the EMR to include functionality codes, CPT codes, and ICD conversions.
  11. Entry of Medicare AWV's quality measures into the Patient Link 360 as required for ACO.
  12. Monitors patient flow and provider schedules to ensure positive patient experiences.
  13. Provides patient education as appropriate to the situation.
  14. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  15. Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments according to infection control protocols and on a regular schedule.
  16. Ensures operation of medical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; etc.
  17. Assists in the maintenance of medical supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies when approved; and verifying receipt of supplies.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. May fill in at front desk, medical records and other areas as needed.
  2. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:
  1. Be committed to the mission of the Bucksport Regional Health Center.
  2. Work as a member of the medical team in the performance of duties.
  3. Be punctual for scheduled work and use time appropriately.
  4. Work in harmonious relationships with all staff, patients, vendors and others.
  5. Perform duties in a conscientious, cooperative manner.
  6. Perform required amount of work in a timely fashion with a minimum of errors.
  7. Be neat and maintain a professional appearance.
  8. Maintain confidentiality and protect the Center by keeping information concerning Operations, patients and employees confidential.
  9. Assist in the care, observation, and the condition of patients including the execution of procedures prescribed for the direct treatment or therapy of patients.
  10. Performance of job requires close coordination with others. Teamwork is essential.
  11. Participation in community activities as a representative of Bucksport Regional Health Center.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED FOR POSITION:
Experience and Skill Requirements: The following experience and skills are considered essential:
  • At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and other employees.
  • Ability to communicate and present information.
  • Ability to read, interpret, understand and apply clinical policies and procedures.
  • Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to establish priorities and coordinate work activities

Education Requirements: The following education requirements are considered essential:
  • High School Diploma or the equivalent is required.
  • Recognized certificate from accredited education institution for Medical Assistant or Certified Nurses Aid, or the equivalent in education and work experience, required.
